Southern Germany's Major Summer Multi-Genre Festival

The Tent Music Festival Freiburg — ZMF for short — is Southern Germany's most renowned multi-genre summer festival. Since 1983, it transforms the Mundenhof grounds on the outskirts of Freiburg into a festival city with several tents, stages, cabaret corners, and a family area every summer. In 2026, the 42nd edition runs from July 15 to August 2, 2026 — a full 19 days of programming over three festival weekends.

Mundenhof — The Unique Festival Location

The Mundenhof is a former model settlement on the western outskirts of Freiburg, now a zoo and event venue. ZMF uses the grounds with its meadows, old trees, and farm buildings as an ideal festival location: central enough for good accessibility (by tram and bus from the city center), yet rural enough for the open festival atmosphere. Several tents serve as the main venues — the Haufe Group Zirkuszelt (largest hall), the Badische-Zeitung-Zelt, the Fürstenberg-Zelt, and others — each with its own program focus and ambiance.

The 2026 program features top names from various music styles:

In addition, there are classical concerts, jazz sets, reggae and soul programs, international world music, and electronic acts — a mix that sets ZMF apart from genre-specific festivals and gives it its special, broad character.

Club Nights, Workshops, Children's Program

Besides the major concerts, ZMF offers club nights on weekends for a younger audience. During the day, there are workshops (music, dance, creative arts), an artistic performance by ZMF's own group "Artistika," and a dedicated vibrant children's program. Free fringe events also take place on the festival grounds — ZMF is organized as a non-profit gGmbH and emphasizes accessibility across all income and age groups.

Sustainability Initiative

ZMF has been running an ambitious sustainability initiative for years: reusable tableware, regional catering, travel recommendations for public transport/cycling, energy-efficient stage technology. The festival positions itself as a flagship project for ecologically responsible large-scale events — fitting for the profile of Freiburg, the "Green City."

Freiburg im Breisgau (District 08311, approx. 235,000 inhabitants) is the southwestern university city of Baden-Württemberg.
