About Zavelstein Crocus Bloom

When the meadows around Zavelstein begin to bloom in delicate purple from early March, one of Southern Germany's most spectacular natural displays begins. The Teinachtal Tourist Information invites you in 2026 to three guided hikes along the 3.8-kilometer KrokusWeg: on March 6th, 11th, and 13th, each at 3 PM. You will learn about the history of the wild crocus Crocus neglectus, which has grown here since the 17th century, traverse the nature reserve, and end with a panoramic view at the Zavelstein castle ruins.

A Botanical Phenomenon in the Middle of the Northern Black Forest

The wild crocus meadows around the castle town of Zavelstein are considered the largest contiguous occurrence of the wild crocus Crocus neglectus in Southern Germany — and thus a botanical rarity of European significance. The plant actually originates from the Mediterranean region and is practically non-existent in Central Europe; Zavelstein is one of the few northern relict sites. Although the orange stigma indicates a relationship with the saffron crocus, no spice can be obtained from Crocus neglectus.

The Legend of the Castle Lord Buwinghausen

The most plausible explanation for its occurrence dates back to the early 17th century: Castle Lord Benjamin Buwinghausen is said to have brought crocus bulbs back from one of his foreign travels around 1620 and planted them in the Zavelstein castle gardens. Over the centuries, crocus seeds got into animal feed, were spread with manure onto the surrounding meadows — and thus spread over several hectares of meadowland. Today, the crocus area is a nature reserve.

Three Guided Hikes in 2026

The Teinachtal Tourist Information organizes a limited number of guided hikes each year during the blooming season. In 2026, there are three dates on the program: Friday, March 6th, Wednesday, March 11th, and Friday, March 13th — each at 3 PM. Advance registration at [email protected] is required. The hike lasts about 1.5 hours and leads through the nature reserve and the historic castle town of Zavelstein, concluding at the Zavelstein castle ruins with a panoramic view.

The KrokusWeg — 3.8 Kilometers Through the Meadows

The signposted KrokusWeg circles the main occurrences over a length of 3.8 km with an elevation gain of about 100 meters. Pure walking time is about 1.5 hours, easily double with nature observation and photo stops. The crocuses bloom — depending on the weather — between the end of February and mid-March; in mild years, the spectacle ends in the first days of March. In 2026, the main bloom ended around March 23rd.

Bad Teinach-Zavelstein in the Calw District

Bad Teinach-Zavelstein is a small town with just over 2,000 inhabitants in the Calw district of the state of Baden-Württemberg, on the edge of the Northern Black Forest. The historic castle town of Zavelstein is one of the highest castle towns in Southern Germany; the spa town of Bad Teinach in the valley has been known for its mineral springs since the 16th century. The crocus bloom is one of the town's most well-known attractions beyond the region — and the only annual event that draws visitors from all over Germany.

Zavelstein Crocus Bloom — edition 2026

In 2026, the Teinachtal Tourist Information is offering three guided hikes through the wild crocus occurrence around Zavelstein. Dates: Friday, March 6th, Wednesday, March 11th, and Friday, March 13th, each at 3 PM. The hike follows the 3.8-kilometer KrokusWeg through the nature reserve and concludes at the Zavelstein castle ruins with a panoramic view. Registration required at [email protected]. The main bloom ended around March 23rd, 2026.

2026 Program — Three Guided Tour Dates

In 2026, the guided hikes are limited to three dates in March: Friday, March 6th, Wednesday, March 11th, and Friday, March 13th. Each guided tour starts at 3 PM at the meeting point in Zavelstein and lasts approximately 1.5 hours. The program includes in-depth botanical and cultural-historical guidance — from the origin of the wild crocus Crocus neglectus from the Mediterranean region and the legend of Castle Lord Buwinghausen to the current conservation of the nature reserve.

Outside of the guided tour dates, the KrokusWeg is freely accessible all day. The weather in 2026 allowed the crocuses to be in full bloom at the beginning of March; by March 23rd, the main bloom was over. Those who did not book a guided hike in 2026 can walk the KrokusWeg on their own at any time.
