Spring plant market at the Open Air Museum Kiekeberg with around 100 exhibitors
The spring plant market is one of the most well-attended events in the annual program of the Open Air Museum Kiekeberg. Twice a year, the grounds at Kiekeberg transform into a large garden market – in spring to start the season and again in autumn. The spring edition is all about the planting season and brings together around 100 exhibitors with a high-quality range.
Perennials, roses, herbs, vegetable seedlings, old fruit varieties, wild plants, seeds, and rare specialties form the core of the offering. Specialty nurseries from Northern Germany present assortments that cannot be found in classic garden centers. Those looking for old apple varieties, historic tomatoes, or bee-friendly wild perennials will find them here, as will collectors of unusual hostas, irises, or peonies.
Accompanying the event, exhibitors offer expert advice at their stands. Renowned garden experts are guests in the lecture program, including, in 2026, organic rose breeder Werner Ruf with a lecture on the topic of insects in the rose garden. Workshops on pruning, fertilizing, and plant diseases complement the offerings.
The unique ambiance of the Open Air Museum makes the plant market special. Between half-timbered houses, cottage gardens, and old farmsteads, the stands are spread across the extensive grounds, complemented by the regular museum attractions. The café, catering, and museum bakery ensure guests' culinary well-being.
The spring edition marks the start of the gardening season in the Hamburg metropolitan region and is a must-attend for hobby gardeners from all over the north. The combination of a high-quality plant offering, expert advice, and a historic setting makes the market unique.
Alongside the market event, the regular museum attractions are open – cottage gardens, historic farmsteads, and workshops complement the market experience.
