Family festival by the water wheel on the banks of the Rezat
The Gmünder Wasserradfest was initiated in the summer of 1984 by the local heritage association and has since developed into one of the largest festivals in the municipality of Georgensgmünd in the Roth district. Alongside the Kirchweih (church consecration festival) in August, it is one of the social highlights of the year and is deliberately aimed at young people and the entire family.
The unmistakable trademark is the rubber boot relay race organized by the Gmünder Werbegemeinschaft (business association). Diverse teams compete in creativity, athleticism, and water-readiness – right in the middle of the Rezat river. This wet spectacle delights both participants and spectators and is the humorous highlight of the festival.
Numerous clubs and providers ensure a varied program: a climbing wall, children's flea market, lawn skiing, sports competitions, as well as performances by magicians, storytellers, musicians, and theater groups. Culinary wishes are also catered for. The festival focuses on participation, discovery, and shared experiences.
In 2026, the Wasserradfest will be completely relocated to the banks of the Rezat river for the first time – between the water wheel and the "Drei Durchfahrten" (Three Crossings). The new location by the water emphasizes the festival's character and makes it an atmospheric family day. Organized by the municipality of Georgensgmünd, the festival strengthens community cohesion and the identity of the Middle Franconia region.
The 41st Gmünder Wasserradfest will be celebrated on May 17, 2026. For the first time, the festival will take place entirely on the banks of the Rezat between the water wheel and the "Drei Durchfahrten". A colorful program for the whole family is offered: the traditional rubber boot relay race through the Rezat as a wet highlight, plus a climbing wall, children's flea market, lawn skiing, and performances by magicians, storytellers, musicians, and theater groups. Numerous clubs and culinary stands provide entertainment and catering.
Georgensgmünd is located in the Roth district in Middle Franconia, south of Nuremberg. Arrive by train to Georgensgmünd (Nuremberg–Treuchtlingen line) or by car via the B 2 / A 9. The festival grounds on the Rezat are within walking distance of the train station.
Admission to the Wasserradfest is free. Costs are incurred for food, drinks, and individual activities.
