Traditional Franconian district Kirchweih in Mäbenberg (Municipality Georgensgmünd, Roth District)
The Kirchweih Mäbenberg is part of the traditional festival calendar of the municipality of Georgensgmünd in the Roth District (Middle Franconia, Bavaria). It is one of the four district Kirchweihen of the municipality – alongside the Petersgmünd Kerwa, the Kerwa in the main town of Georgensgmünd, and Hauslach – and is traditionally celebrated around the weekend of its parish church's feast day. Unlike the large urban folk festivals, a district Kerwa like in Mäbenberg remains a village community event: it is supported by local clubs, and the regular guests are neighbors, friends, and relatives from the region.
The center of the Kerwa is the Oberlandhalle in the district of Mäbenberg. Celebrations take place here over four days: festival beer service, live music with Franconian brass bands and dance bands, Franconian specialties from the festival kitchen, and traditionally the festival service on Sunday followed by a Frühschoppen (morning pint). The hall offers weather-protected space for the main program points – an advantage over Kirchweihen celebrated purely outdoors.
A Franconian Kerwa usually follows a fixed schedule that has also been established in Mäbenberg over the years:
The exact daily program for 2026 will be published by the local clubs shortly before the Kerwa.
The Franconian Kirchweih – short for Kerwa – is one of the most defining folk festival formats in Franconia. Unlike the Swabian-Allemannic folk festivals or the Upper Bavarian Wiesn model, the Kerwa is almost always organized by clubs or a Kerwa society, often accompanied by its own Kerwa youth group („Kerwaboum & Kerwamadli“). In Mäbenberg, the event fits into the dense Kerwa calendar of the Roth District, which features many district Kirchweihen at the end of June and the beginning of July.
Mäbenberg is a district of Georgensgmünd, located between Nuremberg and the Franconian Lake District in southern Middle Franconia. The municipality with around 5,500 inhabitants is on the Nuremberg–Treuchtlingen railway line and is a starting point for excursions to Brombachsee or the Spalter Hopfenland (Spalt Hop Region). The Kirchweih can be well combined with a weekend trip to the region.
The 2026 Kerwa begins on Friday evening, June 26th, 2026, with the ceremonial beer tapping and the opening dance evening in the Oberlandhalle. Saturday features the main festival evening, Sunday the festival service followed by Frühschoppen and lunch menu, and Monday the traditional Kehraus.
