Five-day main Kirchweih on the first weekend of August with beer tapping, parade, and fireworks
With its five-day duration from Thursday to Monday, the Gmünder Kirchweih is among the longest Kirchweihen in Central Franconia. It is organized by the municipality of Georgensgmünd, a Central Franconian market town in the Roth district with almost 8,000 inhabitants. Before the first weekend in August, the festival grounds behind the town hall are set up, and stalls, a beer tent, and amusement rides move in.
The Kirchweih traditionally opens on Thursday evening with the beer tapping ceremony. Afterwards, the Stadtkapelle Georgensgmünd (Georgensgmünd Town Band) plays its brass music evening — a program item with a long tradition that fills the entire festival tent right at the beginning.
The highlight of the festival week is the parade on Saturday afternoon. Clubs, traditional costume groups, music bands, carts, and floats move from the town center to the festival grounds behind the town hall. In parallel, the art exhibition in the Schlösslein opens — the baroque castle of the former lords of the manor, which today hosts cultural events.
The festival concludes on Monday evening with two program items of a traditional character: the rifle shooting by the local shooting clubs and the final fireworks display over the festival grounds. The fireworks are regionally famous and also attract visitors from the Franconian Lake District.
Around the festival tent, amusement rides, lottery stalls, and snack stands occupy the festival grounds. On the culinary side, Franconian specialties dominate: Bratwürste (sausages) with sauerkraut, Schäuferla (pork shoulder), Krautsalat (cabbage salad), Brezen (pretzels) — and of course, festival beer.
Georgensgmünd is located at the confluence of the Fränkische and Schwäbische Rezat rivers, in the south of the Roth district in Central Franconia. The municipality is part of the Franconian Lake District tourism region, with the nearby Brombachsee and Rothsee lakes. The main Kirchweih at the beginning of August is not the only date: the districts of Petersgmünd (June), Mäbenberg (June), and Rittersbach (July) each celebrate their own smaller Kirchweihen.
The Gmünder Kirchweih 2026 adheres to the established five-day festival week. Thursday opening with beer tapping, Saturday with the central parade, Monday with rifle shooting and fireworks to conclude the festivities. Sunday and Friday are reserved for family and festival evenings.
Exact band lineups for the evening events in the beer tent, the list of artists for the Schlösslein exhibition, and the parade order will be communicated by the municipality of Georgensgmünd starting in spring 2026.
