Cinema in a green bastion setting
The Sommerflimmern is one of Würzburg's three major open-air cinemas — and the one with the clearest sustainability profile. The venue is the Bastion above the environmental centre, right next to the Nautiland. Its location high above the banks of the Main offers a wide view into the greenery and at the same time an intimate atmosphere — a deliberate alternative to the large Festungsflimmern spectacle at Marienberg Fortress.
13 film nights, one festival summer
The programme comprises 13 film nights with 13 films spanning indie cinema, festival highlights, arthouse classics and thematically fitting environmental and nature films. The exact programme will be published in mid-June 2026. In addition, music, cabaret, yoga and cultural events are on the list.
A sustainable festival concept
Sommerflimmern is designed as an eco-friendly festival. Catering uses regional products:
- Pinsa — a Roman pizza variant — in four versions (rustic, vegetarian, Mediterranean, vegan)
- Wine, beer and specialty drinks from the region
- Bringing your own food is allowed; bringing your own drinks is not (as the organisers »finance themselves mainly through drink sales«)
Seating consists of 200 bookable deckchairs as well as picnic-blanket spots — anyone who wants a deckchair should reserve in good time.
Sommerflimmern, Festungsflimmern, Stadtflimmern
Würzburg treats itself to three open-air cinemas in summer: the large Festungsflimmern at Marienberg Fortress with a view of the old town (blockbusters, dramas, comedies), the smaller Sommerflimmern with its ecological profile and the city-centre Stadtflimmern. Sommerflimmern is the youngest of the three and appeals to audiences seeking the relaxed atmosphere of smaller cinemas and a conscious film selection.
Würzburg in Lower Franconia
Würzburg is the Lower Franconian university city on the Main and the main hub of Franconian wine-growing. The UNESCO World Heritage Residence, Marienberg Fortress and Würzburg's old town are among the top sights of Bavaria. A visit to Sommerflimmern combines ideally with a tour of Würzburg or a boat trip on the Main.
