The small village of Himmelstadt on the Main river in the Main-Spessart district bears a name that is perfect for the Christmas season. Since 1986, the local post office has been officially run as a Christmas Post Office – it is the only Christmas post office branch in Bavaria. Over 80,000 Letters from All Over the World

Each year during Advent, over 80,000 letters from children worldwide arrive in Himmelstadt. To ensure that every child receives a personal reply from Christkind, 20 to 25 volunteers work in the Christmas Post Office during the Advent season. The branch is operated in cooperation with Deutsche Post. Children can also bring their wish lists in person and drop them into the Christkind mailbox.

The Christmas Market Around the Post Office

The Himmelstadt Christmas Market takes place on the Advent weekends around the Christmas Post Office branch on Kirchplatz. It is intentionally kept small and family-friendly and offers:

• its own arts and crafts market
• changing musical groups
• a diverse children's participation program
• a storyteller, as well as magicians and ventriloquists
• stick bread grilling and candle dipping
• pastry and gingerbread bakery, wood turning

Opening on the 1st Advent

The official opening of the Christmas Post Office traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of Advent – in the past, with prominent guests such as songwriter Rolf Zuckowski. The Christmas market itself opens its stalls on the Advent weekends.
