Kirchweih traditions in Lower Franconia
The Kirchweih in Thüngen is traditionally celebrated around St. Michael's Day (September 29th). The venue is the leisure facility with the Planplatz, organized by the Kirchweihburschen and FC 1920 Thüngen. For four days, the festival combines living traditions with live music and Franconian conviviality – and all this with free admission on all days.
The Kirchweih Tree
On Kirchweih Saturday, the Kirchweihburschen raise the colorfully decorated Kirchweih tree on the Planplatz in the late afternoon – accompanied by the men's choir, children, and a brass band. After a small procession, the official beer tapping takes place in the heated festival tent.
Music from Rock to Brass Bands
The musical program ranges from cover rock on Friday evening to a mix of brass music and party hits on Saturday, and rock, disco, and funk on Monday. A cover band, the "Eschenbachtaler", the "Binsfelder Musikanten", and other formations shape the festival days.
Festive Church Service and Delicacies
Kirchweih Sunday begins with a festive church service in St. Georg's Church, followed by a Weißwurst breakfast in the festival tent. For lunch, there are Franconian delicacies, and in the afternoon, coffee and cake, accompanied by the traditional beer mug sliding competition of the Kirchweihburschen. Monday concludes with senior citizens' coffee and Kesselfleisch (a traditional pork dish).
