21st Edition: Knights of the Dark Night with Torch Tournament and Fire Spectacle
Bentheim Castle is one of Lower Saxony's most significant medieval structures, perched above the town of the same name in the border region with the Netherlands. With its light sandstone, mighty keep, and extensive grounds, it forms the natural backdrop for the Knight Festival, which has been held in the castle park for two decades. For several days, a fully-fledged medieval experience unfolds here, standing out from many smaller medieval markets in terms of size, staging, and program depth.
The visual centerpiece is the grand knight tournament, performed on several days. Horses, lances, coats of arms, and armor clash, and an experienced ensemble stages the battles with high choreographic quality. On Thursday evening, the tournament is presented in a special variant: 'Knights of the Dark Night' perform by torchlight, accompanied by a fire spectacle with fire artists and pyrotechnics. This opening performance is considered one of the season's highlights.
The medieval market unfolds around the main combat arena. Blacksmiths, turners, jewelers, leatherworkers, bow makers, and potters demonstrate their crafts and offer their wares. On several stages, music groups perform with historically informed programs: bagpipes, shawms, hurdy-gurdies, and drums form the sonic framework. The folk group Gradem Aventure is one of the festival's regular acts, delivering multiple sets throughout the weekend.
Jugglers, acrobats, and theatre groups move through the grounds between the market stalls. Strolling through the park, visitors encounter fire artistry, juggling, small theatrical performances, and musical improvisations. This fills the festival grounds with movement and sound throughout the day.
The festival begins on Thursday, April 30, starting at 5 PM with the torchlight tournament. Friday and Saturday run from 11 AM to 11 PM, and Sunday concludes from 11 AM to 8 PM. Tickets are available from 14 Euros via reservix.de and other advance booking points.
With its 21st edition, the format solidifies its position as a fixture in the Northern German medieval calendar. The opening torchlight tournament on Thursday has become a firm program highlight in recent years and is among the most anticipated events of the season.
The program structure is clearly defined: Thursday features the nocturnal tournament spectacle, Friday and Saturday offer full market programming until late at night, and Sunday serves as a quieter family day until early evening.
