Five days of Franconian 'Großkärwa' in the heart of the old town
The Zirndorfer Kirchweih — affectionately called 'Stadtkärwa' by the Franconians — is one of the most traditional and largest Kirchweih festivals in the district of Fürth in Bavaria. For five days, the city center between the market square and the sports field transforms into a continuous festival mile, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from the greater Nuremberg-Fürth area each year. Besides the Zirndorfer Fischerfest (Fishermen's Festival) and the Weiherhof Kirchweih, the Kärwa is the highlight of the city's event calendar.
The traditional opening takes place on Kirchweih Friday starting at 5 PM with the raising of the Kärwabaum in the market square, accompanied musically by the Stadtjugendkapelle Zirndorf. In the following days, the entertainment mile extends from the market square through the city center to the sports field, featuring rides, showman stalls, Franconian specialties, and a large festival tent. Characteristic of the Franconian Kärwa is the combination of a city folk festival and village customs — the 'Kerwabuam' (fair boys) and 'Kerwamadla' (fair girls) in Franconian traditional costume shape the image.
The Stadtkärwa is traditionally celebrated on the weekend around Bartholomäi (August 24) — a fixed date in the Franconian Kärwa season. In the 2026 Kärwa calendar for the city and district of Fürth, Zirndorf is one of the first major dates before smaller village Kärwa festivals like the Weiherhof Kirchweih (September 4–7, 2026) and the Weinzierlein Kirchweih. The city's budget for the Kärwa is around €25,000; highlights such as a concluding fireworks display are decided annually by the city council.
With around 25,000 inhabitants, Zirndorf is the second-largest town in the district after Fürth and is located in the fertile Knoblauchsland between Fürth, Nuremberg, and Cadolzburg. The town is known as the headquarters of toy manufacturers Playmobil/geobra Brandstätter and Bruder Spielwaren — both factors that lend the Kärwa a particularly family-friendly atmosphere. The historic old town with its St. Rochus parish church, market square, and half-timbered buildings provides the ideal backdrop for the five-day Kärwa.
The Zirndorfer Kärwa 2026 runs from Friday, August 21, to Tuesday, August 25. The event area extends from the historic market square through the city center to the sports field and includes a festival tent, rides (Ferris wheel, bumper cars, chain swing), showman stalls with Franconian specialties, and stages for live music and customs.
The opening ceremony on Friday, August 21, at 5 PM features the traditional raising of the Kärwabaum in the market square, accompanied by the Stadtjugendkapelle Zirndorf. Over the five festival days, there will be festival tent evenings with dance music, a Sunday morning pint ('Frühschoppen'), a family day, and traditional parades.
Free admission to the entire Kärwa, the festival tent, and all public program points. Rides, showman attractions, and food/drinks at individual prices set by the showmen. Take the S-Bahn S 4 from Nuremberg Central Station to Zirndorf, then a 5-minute walk to the market square. By car, take the A 73 (exit Fürth-Süd) or the A 6 (exit Schwabach). Parking in the city area is scarce during the Kärwa; public transport is recommended.
