Traditional Old Bavarian Dult in the Baroque City on the Inn
The Neuötting Market Dult is one of the most traditional Dult events in southeastern Bavaria. Historically, a Dult was a large market held twice a year with entertainment – its roots reach back to the early modern period when Neuötting was a preferred market town for salt trading between Bavaria and Salzburg. This tradition lives on today: for six days, the town square and the adjacent Dult area are transformed into a scene of market stalls, amusement rides, festival tents, and club life.
Neuötting is a small town in the district of Altötting in Upper Bavaria, located directly on the Inn River, about three kilometers from the pilgrimage town of Altötting. It is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in Bavaria: the spacious, cobblestone town square with its uniformly designed townhouses and the striking town tower forms the historic center. While Altötting is known as a Marian pilgrimage site, Neuötting has its own charm – the Market Dult is the most important event in its annual calendar.
The Dult begins with the traditional Dult Procession on the first evening of the festival (August 13, 2026): a parade of clubs, traditional costume groups, brass bands, government representatives, and floats moves through the city to the festival tent, followed by the beer tapping ceremony. Before that, the Evening of the Clubs invites local clubs for a get-together in the tent starting at 5:00 PM – a social event that highlights the Dult's close connection to the community.
Over the following days, the festival tent program runs: brass music and party bands alternate on stage; carousels, swing boats, and a Ferris wheel spin in the funfair; market stalls offer sweets, gingerbread, traditional costumes, and household goods. Family days, a traditional costume evening, and the festival finale structure the days. The Market Dult thus combines three components: traditional market, folk festival, and club life – a Bavarian equation that has worked in Neuötting for decades.
The 2026 edition begins on Thursday, August 13, 2026: From 5:00 PM, Stadtmarketing invites you to the Evening of the Clubs in the festival tent. In the evening, the Dult Procession through the city center with traditional costume groups, brass bands, and floats follows, concluding with the beer tapping ceremony. In the following days, the full festival program runs with brass music, party bands, carousels, and market stalls. The final day on Tuesday, August 18, features the festival finale, traditionally with a raffle and great closing atmosphere.
