Würzburg's Major Running Classic
The WVV iWelt Marathon Würzburg is the largest running event in the district capital of Lower Franconia and a fixture in the German spring calendar. The organizer is Stadtmarathon Würzburg e.V.; title sponsors are Würzburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrs-GmbH (WVV) and the IT company iWelt. Over 5,000 participants start every year.
Course Along the Main
The approximately 42.195-kilometer marathon course is run in two identical laps, with the half marathon completed in one lap. The course is largely flat and asphalted, leads along the Main, through the Old Town, and past Würzburg's most beautiful landmarks. This favorable profile makes the race one of the few in Germany officially recognized as a qualifying run for the Boston Marathon. Those who realize mid-race that the full distance is too much can switch from the marathon to the half marathon after 21.1 km.
One Run, Many Distances
In addition to the marathon and half marathon, there is a marathon relay, the 10-km Fun Run, a children's and youth run, the »Raisin Bun Run«, and a Memorial Run. This transforms the day into a family and grassroots sports event for all ages and skill levels.
City Festival on the Course
Around 30 music hotspots line the 21-kilometer loop: Bands, samba groups, and DJs – including the »Radio Gong In The Mix Zone« – spur on runners and spectators. On Marathon Sunday, Würzburg transforms into a single festival mile along the Main, making the run one of the most atmospheric city festivals in the Mainfranken region of Bavaria.
