Bürgerspital Hofschoppenfest

A Franconian Wine Institution — Since 1316

The Würzburger Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist is one of Germany's oldest wineries. Founded in 1316 as a civic foundation with a hospital, it continues to combine viticulture and care for those in need: every drop sold helps finance the foundation's work. The winery is one of the largest in Germany — with vineyards in the Würzburger Stein and in the best Franconian locations.

Hofschoppenfest — The Franconian Wine Festival in the Courtyard

For about half a century, the Bürgerspital has opened its historic courtyard on Bruderhof in June. For eleven evenings, starting at 3 PM, Bürgerspital wines — from fresh Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau to grand Riesling and premium vineyard selections — as well as homemade wine cocktails are served. The wine tavern offers its Franconian menu with snacks, main courses, and Würzburg classics.

Live Music and Lounge Atmosphere

Every evening, a different band performs on the small stage in the courtyard — the spectrum ranges from jazz and soul to Franconian sounds and lounge beat-pop (The Rossinis, Bavarian BEAT BOYS, among others). The atmosphere is more relaxed than at a Volksfest (traditional folk festival), closer to a Mediterranean courtyard bar — which is precisely what makes the Hofschoppenfest a must-attend event for Würzburg locals and wine aficionados.

White Party — The Highlight in White

Midway through the festival, traditionally on the Saturday of the White Weekend, the White Party takes place: exclusively in white attire, with special cuvées, wine cocktails, and extended concerts. The White Party is considered the social summer highlight of the city of Würzburg — advance reservation is highly recommended.

Würzburg — World Capital of Silvaner

Würzburg is the capital of Franconian wine and home to the UNESCO World Heritage Residence. The Hofschoppenfest is part of Würzburg's series of major wine festivals (Weinfest am Stein, Wein am Stein, Hofgartenfest), but differs in its courtyard atmosphere and eleven-day duration: instead of a three-day mass event, it creates a summer lounge that invites longer stays.
