Six Months of Castle Culture Above the Naab Valley
Wolfsegg Castle, first mentioned in historical records in 1278, is among the best-preserved castle complexes in the Upper Palatinate. Situated high above the Naab Valley in the district of Regensburg, it today combines a modern castle museum, a renowned event stage, and a protected habitat for animals and plants. The complex is supported by the Kuratorium Burg Wolfsegg e.V. (Wolfsegg Castle Board of Trustees), which, together with the municipality of Wolfsegg and with funding from Bavaria and EU programs (ELER, LEADER), preserves the castle's cultural heritage.
The traditional season opener of the Castle Summer is traditionally handled by the Wolfsegg Landsknechte, who on the first Sunday in May, from 12 pm to 6 pm, showcase life in the late Middle Ages in historical costume — weapons training, crafts, camp life, music. For families with children, the opening day is one of the most popular program weekends of the year.
Throughout the summer months, the Knights' Hall regularly transforms into a concert hall: classical music, singer-songwriters, and genre-open formats like "Der Neue Mai" perform there. Open-air theatre performances take place in the castle courtyard, and special guided tours explore themes such as castle history, heraldry, or the legend of the "White Lady," the famous castle ghost of Wolfsegg. Artist days, such as the visit of the Urban Sketchers Regensburg, invite visitors to draw and observe.
Wolfsegg is located in the western district of Regensburg, at the transition from the Naab Valley to the Franconian Jura. Visitors to the Castle Summer can combine their day with hikes along the Naab River, a trip to Kallmünz or Regensburg. The castle itself serves as both an excursion destination and a backdrop for weddings — the local registry office conducts ceremonies in the Knights' Hall upon request.
The 2026 Castle Summer was inaugurated on May 3rd with the 'Heimat.Erlebnistag 2026' — an official ceremony in the presence of Finance and Homeland Minister Albert Füracker and regional dignitaries. Already on May 16th, a concert evening with 'Der Neue Mai' followed in the Knights' Hall, and on May 17th, the visit of the Urban Sketchers Regensburg brought artistic life to the castle courtyard.
The season runs until early October with regular performances by the Wolfsegg Landsknechte, special guided tours, family Sundays, and further concerts. Current dates and tickets are available via the castle's events page. The castle itself is regularly open on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 10 am to 4 pm.
