The central street festival of Spandau's Wilhelmstadt – 40 stalls, family program, and live music across four Spandau districts
Wilhelmstadt is a district in the Spandau borough – Berlin's westernmost borough – located south of the Spandau Old Town between the Havel river and Bundesallee. Historically, Wilhelmstadt was a working-class and civil servant quarter that developed around Wilhelmstraße as its central shopping and residential axis. Since the 2010s, one of Berlin's 'Aktives Zentrum' (Active Centre) programs has been running here – an urban development and economic promotion program through which Wilhelmstadt is repositioning itself as a vibrant neighborhood.
The Wilhelmstadtfest was launched in 2014 and has since become the central street festival of the Aktives Zentrum. The organizers are the Wilhelmstadt Business District Management (supported by Friede & Ort GmbH / Mauerpfeffer e.V.) and the restaurant Plan B Spandau, which programs the main stage. Around 40 stalls present local businesses, social institutions, schools, and volunteer initiatives. A diverse children's and family program rounds off the offering.
In 2026, the Sunday of the Wilhelmstadt weekend falls on June 21st – the annual date for the Berlin-wide Fête de la Musique. This overlap is programmatic: while Saturday focuses on stalls and families, Sunday becomes a day of music, with Spandau offering live music in four districts. Plan B Spandau and Café Barfly are the main musical players in Wilhelmstadt itself; additional locations in Altstadt, Neustadt, and Haselhorst are included.
The geographical spread across four Spandau districts (Altstadt, Neustadt, Wilhelmstadt, Haselhorst) makes the format unusual. Spandau, with its island location and strong, grown identity, presents itself on this Sunday as a decentralized festival network. The borough is considered 'the city within the city' in the state of Berlin – with its own Old Town, its own medieval history, and its own cultural program.
Plan B Spandau – a combination of bar, pub, and living-room event venue on Wilhelmstraße – is the programmatic link. For the weekend, the Plan B team programs the main stage outside and curates the acts performing as part of the Fête de la Musique. Free admission; the €5,360 funding from the Aktives Zentrum supports the event.
The 2026 edition continues the established weekend format: Saturday as a family and market day, Sunday as a musical highlight integrated into the Fête de la Musique. Plan B Spandau programs the main stage outside with a mix of regional bands, singer-songwriters, and electronic sets. Café Barfly and other local gastronomy businesses complement with acoustic sets in the surrounding courtyards.
For those wanting to discover Spandau beyond the tourist routes of the Old Town, the Wilhelmstadtfest offers an ideal introduction: a neighborhood in transformation, with active community work and a festival tradition that has grown year by year since 2014.
