Garden and Sustainability Festival on 10,000 square meters of teaching garden in the Spandau district
The 'Open Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg' campaign has been bringing together hobby gardeners, school gardens, monastery gardens, and urban initiatives for a joint weekend for years. Hundreds of private and public gardens in Berlin and Brandenburg open their gates and offer insights into what has been cultivated behind hedges and driveways. The Spandau School-Environment Centre is one of the largest stations in western Berlin.
The garden school on Borkzeile covers around 10,000 square meters and has been a learning place for Berlin school classes for decades. The grounds include: a kitchen and herb garden, student plots, composting facilities, a perennial garden, green walls, a raised pond, and a small greenhouse. During the festival, the SUZ staff will guide visitors through the individual areas, showcase the apiary and wild bee habitats, explain the ant path, and answer questions about ecological gardening practices.
A sustainability flea market runs parallel to the garden program: Residents from Spandau sell used garden tools, perennials from their own propagation, books, tools, and children's clothing at low prices. The focus is less on bargain hunting and more on a lived commitment to the circular economy. Coffee, cake, and savoury snacks round off the day.
The Spandau district gives the western Berlin borough its name. Known primarily for the medieval Citadel, the baroque St. Nicholas' Church, and the old town with its alleys, Spandau also has a green side: the Havel river, the Spektesee lake, the large Falkenhagener Feld housing estate, and the garden area on Borkzeile at the transition to the Westsiedlung. The School-Environment Centre has been one of the district's most important extracurricular educational sites for years.
Between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, the grounds at Borkzeile 34 (Entrance Petersenweg, 13583 Berlin) will open their doors. Guided tours and workshops will focus on ecological gardening, wild plants, beekeeping, and composting. In parallel, local residents will offer a flea market with a focus on reuse.
