Twelve days of Upper Bavarian folk festival on Wessobrunner Straße
The Weilheim Volksfest is one of the largest and longest folk festivals in southern Upper Bavaria. Organized by the town of Weilheim in the Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria, it spans twelve days from mid to late May. The venue is the festival grounds on Wessobrunner Straße – a classic folk festival site with a large festival tent, a fairground alley, and spacious outdoor areas.
The opening takes place on the first day of the festival at 11 a.m. with a concert in Marienplatz, followed by the festive festival parade along Münchner Straße, Schützenstraße, and Wessobrunner Straße to the festival grounds. There, 1st Mayor Tillman Wahlefeld – newly in office since 2026 – will tap the first keg at 12 p.m. in the festival tent.
The festival tent has several hundred seats. Upper Bavarian festival beer is served in liter steins. The menu follows Bavarian folk festival tradition: pork knuckles, half chickens, grilled fish on a stick, Obatzda (cheese spread), pretzels, sausage salad, Käsespätzle (cheese noodles). Daily changing lunch menus are available from 11 a.m. onwards. Regional suppliers such as the Klobeck butcher shop and the trout farm from Wessobrunn provide the folk festival with specialties from the Pfaffenwinkel region.
The town of Weilheim relies on a professional safety concept: private security service, trained service staff, a clear policy against alcohol abuse among young people. This concept makes the Weilheim Volksfest one of the most family-friendly folk festivals in Upper Bavaria – families from all over the Pfaffenwinkel region travel for the family days.
Weilheim in Upper Bavaria is the district capital of the Weilheim-Schongau district and the gateway to the Pfaffenwinkel region with its baroque Rococo churches (Wieskirche, Wessobrunn, Steingaden). For generations, the folk festival has been a social gathering event for this region.
The Weilheim Volksfest 2026 begins on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, with a concert in Marienplatz at 11 a.m. and the subsequent festival parade along Münchner Straße, Schützenstraße, and Wessobrunner Straße to the festival grounds. At 12 p.m., 1st Mayor Tillman Wahlefeld – for the first time since taking office in 2026 – will tap the first keg in the festival tent.
The twelve festival days until Whit Monday, May 25th, offer a packed program with a total of 13 different orchestras and bands, 24 rides and games, a senior afternoon, family days, a day for clubs and companies, and a boxing match with a raffle draw on May 24th. The closing on May 25th is themed as a family day and includes a presentation of the local rescue and aid organizations.

Food and drinks are ordered directly at the table in the beer tent – liter of festival beer approx. €11–€13, half chicken approx. €12, pork knuckle €18–€22 (indication for Upper Bavarian folk festivals 2024). Rides have individual prices, reduced on family days.
