One of the oldest markets in the Neckar-Odenwald district — 456th edition with funfair, castle service, and sculpture cycle path anniversary
The Pfingstmarkt in Merchingen has been celebrated every year at Pentecost since the 16th century — the 2026 edition is the 456th. For four days, the Schlossplatz in Ravenstein-Merchingen — at the city castle of the former Imperial Knights — transforms into a folk festival area. It is one of the oldest continuously celebrated markets in the Neckar-Odenwald district and is part of the town's identity. Pentecost in Merchingen means: funfair, flea market, castle service, accordion music — and for the residents of the surrounding Hohenlohe region, one of the most important festival dates in May.
The market runs continuously for four days, from Saturday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon:
Around the festival tent, the funfair sets up with dodgems, a children's carousel, shooting galleries, candy stalls (gingerbread, almonds, cotton candy), and bratwurst stands. The funfair is rather small-town friendly — not a Stuttgart Volksfest, but a family-friendly format with manageable waiting times and a personal atmosphere. Especially suitable for families with small children.
A special feature of the Merchingen Pfingstmarkt is the Schloss-Service: On Whit Monday and Tuesday, the historic castle cake workshop opens its doors for a feast. You eat here truly historically — grilled poultry, regional pork roast specialties, wine from the Hohenlohe region — in the ambiance of a Renaissance castle. In addition, there is classic folk festival catering: bratwurst, fries, cheese spaetzle, gyros, tornado potatoes, chicken, Hungarian langos, soft-serve ice cream, crêpes, along with wine cocktails and beer from a regional brewery.
On the meadows around the festival tent, a large flea market opens on Whit Sunday and Monday. Unlike commercial antique markets, it is a classic regional flea market with household clear-outs, collector's items, bric-a-brac, and undiscovered treasures — popular with Pentecost tourists from the Neckar-Odenwald region and nearby Bavarian Franconia.
A special highlight in 2026 is the anniversary tour of the Sculpture Cycle Path. This themed cycle path was created 20 years ago — it connects the districts of Ravenstein and features sculptures by regional and supra-regional artists along its route. On Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, at 2 PM, a guided bike tour starts for the 20th anniversary — an ideal combination of sport, art, and town tradition.
Ravenstein, a town with around 3,500 inhabitants in the Neckar-Odenwald district, is located in Bauland — the hilly landscape between the Tauber and Neckar rivers. The town consists of the districts of Merchingen (seat of the Imperial Knights), Ballenberg, Hüngheim, and others. Schloss Merchingen was the seat of the Imperial Knights of Merchingen-Hohenfels — an important noble family of the Holy Roman Empire. Bauland is a rural region with agriculture and forestry, scattered orchards, and viticulture — the Pfingstmarkt is the social Pentecost event of the region.
The Pfingstmarkt Merchingen 2026 will take place in the established four-day format. The official market opening will be on Whit Sunday at 4 PM in the festival tent with the tapping of the first keg and live music by the Akkordeon-Clubs Ravenstein. Whit Monday features the traditional tractor and vintage car meeting and, at 2 PM, the guided bike tour for the 20th anniversary of the Sculpture Cycle Path.
Whit Tuesday concludes with the classic castle lunch at 12 PM and the family discount day.
Free admission. Rides, food, and drinks at usual folk festival prices. Castle lunch available with reservation.
By car: A6 exit Bad Friedrichshall or Möckmühl, then follow signs for Ravenstein-Merchingen. By train: Möckmühl station or Walldürn station, then take a bus to Ravenstein.
Free admission to the market grounds. Food, drinks, and rides available on site.
For an authentic experience, reserve the Schloss-Mittagessen on Whit Tuesday at 12 PM in the castle courtyard — a tradition that has attracted Pfingstmarkt visitors for generations. Before and after the market, Ravenstein's wine hikes and castle tours offer an interesting addition.
