Flower-adorned parade and Kirchweih in the 'Flower Town' in the Nürnberger Land region
Röthenbach an der Pegnitz bears the nickname Flower Town – and not without reason. For decades, the annual Blumenfest (Flower Festival) with its floral-decorated parade has been the identity-defining event of this Middle Franconian town in the Nürnberger Land district. The 85th edition will take place in 2026. The organizers are the City of Röthenbach a.d.Pegnitz and the Vereinskartell Röthenbach (Röthenbach Association Cartel).
The highlight is the Blumenfest parade on Sunday afternoon: floats, decorated exclusively with fresh flowers – dahlias are the traditional material and shape the look – move from the Pegnitzgrund (Pegnitz river valley) via the Old Festival Grounds through the town center to Hubert-Munkert-Platz. At the front rides the reigning Flower Queen; currently, it is Emily Schätz, she is chauffeured by the Kleingartenverein Flora (small garden association Flora). The audience votes for the most beautiful floats via QR code during the parade.
For four days – Friday to Monday – the town center around the main car park/Kirchweihplatz transforms into a festival mile: Kirchweih (fair) with rides and stalls, plus a stage program, catering, and the Stadtkapelle Röthenbach (town band) at Hubert-Munkert-Platz, and recently the vernissage 'Sprache der Blüten' (Language of Blossoms) in the Neue Mitte event space. The festival motto for 2026 is 'Blumen | Licht | Musik' (Flowers | Light | Music).
Over the decades, the Blumenfest has developed into one of the largest local events in the Nürnberger Land region. The mix of arts and crafts (the floats are made in months of association work), Volksfest (folk festival) atmosphere, and floral decoration is unique in the wider area around Nuremberg. The parade regularly draws thousands of spectators to the streets.
Röthenbach a.d.Pegnitz is a town in the Nürnberger Land district in Middle Franconia. It is located about 15 km east of Nuremberg on the Nuremberg–Hersbruck–Bayreuth railway line (S-Bahn S1). Many visitors come directly from the greater Nuremberg area to the parade via the S-Bahn.
In 2026, Röthenbach a.d.Pegnitz celebrates the 85th edition of its Blumenfest from August 28 to 31. The motto 'Flowers | Light | Music' combines the three pillars of the festival program: flower-adorned parade, evening illumination of the festival grounds, and a dense musical supporting program.
Already on Friday, August 28, the Kirchweih opens at 6 PM with rides, stalls, and catering; the official festival opening with a vernissage and concert takes place on Friday evening. Throughout the weekend, the festival operations, stages, and association stalls run parallel to the Kirchweih. Sunday is the main festival day with the parade.
Admission to the Blumenfest, the Kirchweih, and the flower parade is free. Rides, food, and drinks are paid for individually on-site.
Take the S-Bahn S1 from Nuremberg Central Station to Röthenbach (approx. 20 minutes). By car, take the A9 (Nuremberg–Berlin) exit Lauf-Süd or the B14. During the Blumenfest, traffic diversions will be in place around the festival grounds and the parade route.
