Combat demonstrations, mead, and Midsummer bonfire at the historic Roter Haubarg
The Roter Haubarg is one of the most famous historic farmhouses on the Schleswig-Holstein west coast: a 17th-century farmhouse built in the typical Frisian Haubarg style, with a characteristic high roof and a rich interior. Today, it houses a museum and a restaurant — and in summer, the Wikingersommer.
For two days, the meadow around the Haubarg is transformed into a Viking camp: reconstructed tents made of linen and fur, campfires, blacksmiths, cloth merchants, woodcarvers. The program includes: combat demonstrations and weapon displays up close, axe throwing and crossbow shooting to participate in, a children's shield wall for the little ones, plus storytellers, a falconry show, live music, and a magician. On Saturday afternoon, an authentic Viking wedding is traditionally the highlight — ceremony, costumes, and wedding in the 9th-century style.
The weekend is deliberately timed for Midsummer: On Saturday evening, a fire show and Midsummer celebration follow, celebrating the longest day of the year with drums, torches, and a large campfire. The market is open until 9:00 PM on Saturday — and until 6:00 PM on Sunday.
Witzwort is located on the Eiderstedt peninsula in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, about 15 kilometers west of Husum. The region between the Eider river and the North Sea is famous for its thatched-roof farmhouses (Haubarg), its salt marshes, and its Viking past — the famous Viking town of Haithabu is about 70 kilometers to the east, but the Viking camp at the Roter Haubarg directly connects to this heritage.
With a symbolic entrance fee of 99 cents and free admission for children under sword length, the Wikingersommer is a deliberately family-friendly format — not an elitist reenactment, but open to everyone who wants to immerse themselves in another era.
As in previous years, Die Rattenbäcker will set up a complete Viking camp at the Roter Haubarg, supplemented by market stalls from craftsmen, cloth merchants, and food vendors. Combat demonstrations and hands-on activities shape the day's program, followed by a Viking wedding, Midsummer celebration, and fire show on Saturday evening.
