Spring Customs by the Open Fire

The Easter bonfire is one of the oldest spring customs in Northern Germany. Fires were lit at significant times of the year even in pre-Christian times to drive away winter spirits and promote growth. With Christianization, many of these fires were integrated into the Easter cycle; in Lower Saxony, the Easter bonfire is still maintained with great naturalness to this day.

Cremlingen as the Stage

In Cremlingen, the Easter bonfire is organized by the local associations. Weeks before the event, wood is collected and piled into a multi-meter high stack. On Easter Sunday evening, this is lit – an image that, combined with the cool evening weather, creates a special atmosphere.

Bratwurst and Drinks

The accompanying program is deliberately simple: association catering with bratwurst, drinks, and sweet snacks. Those who come often stay for several hours, meet neighbors they haven't seen all winter, and get in the mood for the coming spring and summer season.

Embedded in the Cremlingen Festival Year

The Easter bonfire symbolically opens the Cremlingen festival calendar. It is followed by the Maypole raising at the end of April, a village flea market, and a citizens' brunch in the summer – a broad program of events that shapes Cremlingen's village life throughout the year.
