210th Schützen- und Heimatfest at the Stadtpark — five days of tradition, parade, Großer Zapfenstreich, and Sommerkirmes in the heart of the Bergisches Land
The Remscheider Schützenverein von 1816 e.V. is one of the oldest civic associations in the city. What began as a citizens' militia more than two centuries ago is today a firmly established urban tradition: the Schützen- und Heimatfest with its associated Sommerkirmes at the Schützenplatz am Stadtpark. In 2026, the association celebrates its 210th edition — a remarkable anniversary that reflects the close connection between the association, the city, and the Bergisches homeland culture.
The festival is classically divided into two worlds of experience: the traditional programme with citizen and king shooting, Großer Zapfenstreich, and parade on one side, and the Sommerkirmes funfair with amusement rides, showmen, and food stalls on the other. Both worlds intertwine and attract thousands of visitors from Remscheid, Wuppertal, Solingen, and the entire Bergisches Städtedreieck (Bergisches Tri-City Area) every year.
Located directly next to the Remscheid Stadtpark, the Schützenplatz offers the necessary space for the festival tent, carousels, and shooting ranges. The venue is within a few minutes' walk from the city centre, and the Remscheid train station is just a short stroll away. Those arriving by car will find several paid parking facilities around the Stadtpark.
The Großer Zapfenstreich at Theodor-Heuss-Platz marks the ceremonial start, and the parade on Sunday afternoon leads the shooting societies back through the Remscheid city centre to the festival grounds. The king shooting crowns the new shooting king, and the fireworks display on the opening Friday provides a dazzling highlight. In between, live music in the festival tent, a family day with reduced ride prices, and the traditional citizen shooting offer round-the-clock entertainment.
The city of Remscheid is an independent city in the Bergisches Städtedreieck (North Rhine-Westphalia), together with Wuppertal and Solingen. The Schützenfest is one of the most traditional Volksfeste (popular festivals) in the Bergisches Land and has shaped the cultural identity of the city for generations.
The 210th anniversary of the Remscheider Schützenverein von 1816 will be celebrated with a five-day Heimat- und Schützenfest. At the classic festival grounds at Stadtpark, you can expect traditional fairground attractions — carousels, bumper cars, food stalls — combined with the shooting association's traditional customs programme.
