About Nordsee Classic Krummhörn

Every year at the end of August, the Nordsee Classic Oldtimer Rallye brings historic automobiles through the East Frisian Krummhörn. The start and finish point is the fishing village of Greetsiel, whose historic setting provides the perfect backdrop for the festively lined-up classic and youngtimers. The route leads through the typical marsh landscape of the Krummhörn, past terpen, brick churches, old mills, and the famous Pilsum lighthouse. The format is not a speed race, but a touring and orientation rally, focusing on consistent driving, precise navigation, and stage tasks.

Classic Car Culture Meets East Frisian Landscape

The Nordsee Classic combines two worlds that, at first glance, seem to have little in common: the world of classic automobiles and the tranquil, vast landscape of the Krummhörn. In reality, however, the two complement each other perfectly: the East Frisian country roads with their manageable inclines, expansive sightlines, and low traffic volume are ideal for relaxed cruising with historic vehicles not designed for modern motorways.

What Characterizes the Rally

The Nordsee Classic is not a speed rally – fast driving is explicitly not required. Instead, the format tests:

  • Consistency – adherence to a predetermined average speed
  • Navigation – following detailed roadbook instructions
  • Stage Tasks – small tasks along the way, e.g., estimation questions or observation tasks
  • Precision – exact arrival times at control points

This makes the event interesting for co-drivers and family teams as well, who can try their hand at maps and stopwatches together.

Route through the Krummhörn

The route changes from year to year but traditionally follows the most beautiful routes in the Krummhörn. Typical stage locations include:

  • Greetsiel – Start and finish with a vehicle parade at the harbor
  • Pilsum Lighthouse – Photo stop at what is probably Germany's most photographed lighthouse
  • Pilsum, Manslagt, Eilsum, Loquard – Smallest districts of the Krummhörn
  • Hinte and Hintensee – Views of the Wadden Sea
  • Krummhörn Marsh – Wide sightlines, sheep on the dike, drainage ditches

For Spectators

Even those who are not classic car enthusiasts will enjoy the event: Before the start, the festively lined-up vehicles gather in Greetsiel harbor – a living automobile museum. Maps of the route are published by the organizer, allowing spectators to experience the passing convoy along interesting points (e.g., at the Pilsum Lighthouse). The finish is in the afternoon, often with an award ceremony and a relaxed conclusion.
