Family festival around the Grüffelo Trail on the island of Föhr
Föhr is one of the largest German North Sea islands and belongs to the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With its green marsh landscape, traditional Frisian villages, and an area of almost 90 square kilometers, Föhr is a top destination for family holidays. The Wrixumer Forst — a mixed forest in the west of the island — has become an adventure spot thanks to the Grüffelo Trail.
The Gruffalo is the main character of the children's book of the same name by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler (1999), which has become one of the most successful children's books of all time worldwide. On Föhr, the book has been turned into a trail in the forest with figures and stations from the story. The Grüffelo Fest builds on this: For one day, the forest opens its gates to a program centered around the story:
The Grüffelo Fest is part of the island of Föhr's Easter program, which brings together several family events every year during Holy Week and around Easter. While families from the mainland usually travel from the south, Föhr's island children also benefit from the programs. The Grüffelo Fest is one of the highlights and always an occasion for family excursions by ferry from Dagebüll.
Admission is free and no registration is required. Families come if they want to — the atmosphere is relaxed, the program family-oriented. In the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the Grüffelo Fest is an example of how an island tourism agency translates classic family literature into adventure tourism — without commercializing its character.
The 2026 edition of the Grüffelo Fest falls on April 2nd, during Easter week — a date that makes the event a natural program item for families on Easter holidays in Föhr. The Wrixumer Forst serves as the stage, the Grüffelo Trail is part of the experience.
Unlike many family festivals, the Gruffalo himself is actually present in a costume — photos and cuddles with the book character are among the main attractions for the youngest visitors. The weather determines the accompanying program: sunshine brings the Wyker children's folk dance group in Frisian costume to the meadow, while rain shifts the program to the children's disco.
