One Island, One Festival
Jazz goes Föhr has been held every summer since 1998 on the North Sea island of Föhr, making it one of the oldest and most established jazz festivals on the North German islands. The island in the North Frisia district of Schleswig-Holstein, with around 8,500 inhabitants and an area of 82 km², is filled with sounds during the festival – from intimate performances in the Music Pavilion on Sandwall in Wyk to large concerts in the Kurgartensaal.
Three Island Villages, Several Stages
The festival is deliberately designed to be island-wide. Concerts take place in:
- Wyk auf Föhr – Kurgartensaal am Sandwall 38 (main venue) and Music Pavilion am Sandwall (open-air, free)
- Nieblum – Church concerts and pub jazz
- Utersum – West coast, beach, and spa hotel concerts
Programmatic Spectrum
Jazz goes Föhr boasts a broad program. It includes Jazznights with international combos, Big Band Brunches featuring Wyk's breakfast culture and live big bands, African Jazz evenings, jam sessions with local musicians, family concerts, and occasionally crossover programs with classical or world music. A regular highlight is the performance by Nils Landgren's Funk Unit, connecting the festival with the Nordic jazz profile of JazzBaltica Connection.
Free Daytime Concerts at the Pavilion
A special feature of Föhr: At the Music Pavilion on Sandwall, daytime concerts are held during the festival from the late afternoon onwards – with free admission and a direct view of Sandwall and the North Sea surf in the background. These public concerts make the festival accessible to every island visitor, even without a ticket. The evening main concerts in the Kurgartensaal require a ticket but are affordably priced for families.
