Classical music under the ship models — the Frisian Cathedral of Föhr as an SHMF venue
The St. Johannis Church in Nieblum is called the «Frisian Cathedral» because of its exceptional size for an island church. Built in the 13th century, it is shaped by the island's maritime history — shipowners' families, whalers, and sea captains have left their mark here over centuries. Its most famous features are the hanging ship models as votive offerings under the ceiling and the medieval interior with a pulpit, altar, and gravestones in front of the entrance.
Since 1986, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival has presented around 200 concerts every year in unusual venues between Lübeck, Husum, Sylt, and Hamburg. On Föhr, St. Johannis Nieblum, the Museum Kunst der Westküste in Alkersum, and the W.D.R. ferry Wyk on Föhr form a small island network — making the island a concentrated SHMF location throughout the season.
Thanks to its large, high ceiling, the St. Johannis Church has distinctive acoustics that particularly enhance organ music, chamber music, and vocal ensembles. Visitors to the church for the SHMF come not only for the music but also for the medieval atmosphere — brick vaults, wrought-iron lamps, the view of the maritime symbolism on the wall panels and ship models.
Nieblum is located in the west of the island of Föhr, just a few kilometers from Wyk and Alkersum. The Frisian village is known for its thatched houses, the traditional Frisian cemetery around the church, and access to the beach. Island guests, day-trippers from Wyk, and SHMF travelers from all over northern Germany attend the concerts.
The complete concert program for SHMF 2026 — including the concerts at St. Johannis Church Nieblum — will be published on shmf.de and in the SHMF program booklet. As in previous years, the Föhr dates are expected to be between mid-July and mid-August of the season.
Those who wish to attend the entire Föhr program can combine it with the SHMF concerts on the W.D.R. ferry Wyk on Föhr and at the Museum Kunst der Westküste in Alkersum — all three venues are within a few kilometers of each other.
By train to Dagebüll Mole, then take the W.D.R. ferry to Wyk on Föhr. On Föhr, use bus, bike, or car to get to Nieblum (approx. 5 km west of Wyk).
