Over 400-year-old traditional fair in the Wilhelmshaven district of Sengwarden
The Sengwarder Markt was first documented in 1618 — making it older than the Thirty Years' War, which broke out a year later. Over generations, the market has survived wars, political upheavals, and societal changes. The 408th edition in 2026 is an expression of unbroken local identity and a strong village community that has preserved Sengwarden even after its incorporation into Wilhelmshaven.
The market spans nine days and offers a remarkably diverse program. A medieval market with historical crafts, jugglers, and medieval food is one of the highlights. In addition, there is a go-kart race for children, the Sengwarder Marktlauf for running enthusiasts, a large flea market, a symphony concert, dance evenings, a lantern procession, and the traditional Labskaus meal. A special feature is the political Monday brunch, where local politics and citizens come together.
The Sengwarder Markt is more than just a folk festival (Volksfest). It is an expression of a vibrant district identity and, at the same time, a meeting point for the entire population of Wilhelmshaven. Associations, schools, church communities, sports clubs, and private initiatives contribute to the program. Anyone who has experienced the atmosphere of this nine-day festival understands why Sengwarden is proud of this 400-year-old tradition.
The 408th edition in 2026 continues the unbroken tradition since the first documented mention in 1618. The exact date within late August 2026 will be communicated by the organizer in due time.
Few markets in Northern Germany can look back on such a long history. The Sengwarder Markt is a piece of living social history.
The exact program for 2026, including all days and program points, will be published by the Sengwarder Markt Committee. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Admission to most program points is free.
Sengwarden is a district in the north of Wilhelmshaven, accessible via the A 29 (Wilhelmshaven-Nord exit) and the B 437. Reachable by bus from Wilhelmshaven city center. Parking is signposted in the festival area.
