Traditional fair in Groß Lafferde since 1787 with 230 stalls and fireworks display
The Lafferder Markt looks back on a history of more than 235 years. Its roots date back to 1787, when the market was first documented. This makes it one of the oldest continuous markets in the region and a living piece of Lower Saxony's market history. Over the centuries, the character of the market has changed, but the fundamental mix of goods, entertainment, and social gathering has been preserved.
On the two market days, around 230 stalls are spread across the Marktstraße, the area around the water tower, and the central market square. The offerings range from classic market goods such as clothing, household items, and tools to regional handicrafts, sweets, gingerbread hearts, and culinary specialties of all kinds. Carousels, roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, and smaller rides complement the offerings with a spacious amusement park that attracts families from all over the district.
The water tower of Groß Lafferde is one of the architectural landmarks of the municipality of Ilsede. During the Lafferder Markt, it is open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. From the upper floor, there is a spectacular view of the market activities and the landscape of the Peine district. Visiting the water tower is a fixed part of the market visit for many regular attendees.
The traditional highlight is the fireworks display on Thursday evening around 9:30 p.m. Thousands of spectators gather on the festival grounds and along the Marktstraße to watch the pyrotechnic spectacle. The fireworks mark the emotional conclusion of the market and have been a fixed date in the municipality's event calendar for decades.
The Lafferder Markt is more than just a market. It is a social event where residents of the municipality of Ilsede and the surrounding villages meet. Family gatherings, class reunions, club outings, and encounters with former neighbors are part of the market scene. For many, visiting the Lafferder Markt is a long-standing tradition passed down through generations.
From early Wednesday morning to late Thursday evening, Groß Lafferde is in market mode. The Marktstraße becomes a festival mile, the market square a meeting point, and the water tower a viewpoint.
