Wine Spring in Aachen's Spa Quarter

When the May Wine Queen is crowned on the last weekend of April in front of the Abteitor Burtscheid, the musical spring begins for Aachen's spa quarter: The Burtscheid May Wine Festival is one of Aachen's most traditional district events, combining four days of wine, gastronomy, live music, and a neighborhood festival right in the historic heart of Burtscheid. The organizer is the Burtscheider Interessens Gemeinschaft (BIG), which brings together business people, clubs, and residents.

Four Days of Program

• Thursday, April 30th, 2026 — Opening: Official start with the entrance of the May Wine Queen, festive crowning at the Abteitor, first wine service stands open
• Friday, May 1st, 2026 — Labor Day: Children's Flea Market on Kapellenstraße (major family highlight of the festival), festival operations at the Abteitor
• Saturday, May 2nd, 2026 — Festival Day: Full operation with live music, wine tasting, gastronomy, and district atmosphere
• Sunday, May 3rd, 2026 — Closing: Festival operations until Sunday evening, closing program

Burtscheid — the Spa Town in Southern Aachen

Burtscheid is one of the oldest and most unusual districts of Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia: Until 1897, it was an independent spa town with a tradition of thermal baths and a baroque monastery complex. The Abteitor, as a historic city gate, still marks the transition between Aachen and the former spa town. The Burtscheider Interessens Gemeinschaft carries the district's identity through events like the May Wine Festival — consciously as a neighborhood festival, not a tourism event.

Wine, Gastronomy, Club Life

The May Wine Festival focuses on the combination of wine service from regional and supra-regional wineries, gastronomy from Burtscheid's restaurants and cafés, and club participation — local clubs contribute with stands and programs. Live music alternates between classic stage entertainment and smaller concert performances in the side streets.
