Three weeks of Advent magic between the pedestrian zone and the lake promenade — the only Christmas market directly on Lake Constance
The Bodensee-Weihnacht in Friedrichshafen is one of Southern Germany's most spectacular Christmas market experiences — and the only market located directly on Central Europe's largest body of water. For three Advent weeks, from the first weekend of Advent until just before Christmas, the market stretches from the pedestrian zone (Karlstraße, Hafenstraße) to the lake promenade. The setup is spread across three squares — Buchhornplatz, Romanshorner Platz, Adenauerplatz — connected by illuminated rows of stalls along Karlstraße.
Over 60 stalls are spread throughout the city center. The offerings mix regional handicrafts (glass from Konstanz, ceramics from Upper Swabia, wood carvings from the Allgäu) with classic Advent goods (Christmas tree decorations, stars, incense, sweets). The highlight is the large illuminated Christmas pyramid on Buchhornplatz — it's one of the market's landmarks. On Romanshorner Platz, there's an artificial ice stock sport rink that you can rent by prior reservation — families, companies, and friend groups use it as an Advent ritual. A living nativity scene with donkeys, sheep, and children in biblical costumes is set up at the harbor forecourt. The decorated Christmas tree on Adenauerplatz towers over 20 meters high — visible from the water.
Friedrichshafen, with just under 62,000 inhabitants, is the second-largest city on Lake Constance (after Konstanz). It is the birthplace of airship construction (Zeppelin), home to ZF Friedrichshafen (automotive supplier group) and MTU Friedrichshafen (engine manufacturer). In summer, it's a tourist magnet — Lake Constance Cycle Path, boat trips, Zeppelin Museum, Dornier Museum. In winter, the Bodensee-Weihnacht attracts tourists again: day-trippers come by car or train from Stuttgart, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, and Vorarlberg.
On clear days, you can see the snow-capped Swiss and Austrian Alps from the lake shore — Säntis, Hoher Kasten, Bregenzer Wald, Vorarlberg Pre-Alps. This view is the true brand core of the Bodensee-Weihnacht: no other German Advent market has this backdrop. As the sun sets behind the Swiss mountains, the market begins to glow — and the waters of Lake Constance reflect the lights.
The Bodensee-Weihnacht 2026 runs for almost four weeks, making it one of the longest Christmas markets in Baden-Württemberg. The format has evolved over the years: while the market was previously concentrated mainly on Buchhornplatz, it now extends throughout the entire city center and the lake promenade.
The ice stock sport rink on Romanshorner Platz has become a crowd-puller since its introduction in 2018 — families, clubs, and companies reserve lanes for their Christmas parties.
The living nativity scene at the harbor forecourt is a tradition jointly maintained by Catholic Upper Swabia and the Protestant Lake Constance region.Free admission. Mulled wine €4–5 (plus deposit), snacks €6–10. Ice stock sport rink reservable (approx. €25–35 per lane/hour, depending on size).
