Classical sounds in the Dutch town of Friedrichstadt
The Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF) is one of Europe's most internationally renowned classical festivals. Every summer, it transforms churches, barns, and castles throughout the state into concert halls. One of the most atmospheric venues is the St. Christophorus Church in Friedrichstadt – a unique town in the Nordfriesland district, founded in the 17th century by Dutch religious refugees.
Friedrichstadt feels like a piece of Holland in Schleswig-Holstein: brick houses with stepped gables, canals instead of streets, boat trips through the town. The St. Christophorus Church dates back to the 17th century and, with its simple elegance and excellent acoustics, offers a setting ideal for SHMF's chamber and vocal music.
The 41st festival edition runs from July 4 to August 30, 2026, and includes around 205 concerts in 120 venues. International top artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Hilary Hahn, Daniil Trifonov, Grigory Sokolov, and the Swedish pop phenomenon Roxette are on the program. In 2026, Swedish musical culture will be a special focus – with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and works by Wilhelm Stenhammar.
Friedrichstadt is located in the Nordfriesland district, right between the marsh landscapes of the Eider and Treene rivers. The town is a popular tourist destination on the Schleswig-Holstein west coast and has been associated with the SHMF for decades, offering a delight of classical music, architecture, and North German landscape.
As part of the 41st SHMF edition from July 4 to August 30, 2026, the St. Christophorus Church Friedrichstadt will open its doors for concerts of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. The exact concert dates and programs at the Friedrichstadt venue will be announced in more detail by the organizer in the 2026 festival program closer to the date.
The simple elegance of the church and its excellent acoustics make Friedrichstadt one of the preferred venues for chamber music, vocal works, and baroque programs.
The detailed programming of the concerts in Friedrichstadt 2026 will be announced by the SHMF in spring 2026. Experience shows that programs focusing on Baroque music, vocal works, and chamber music are typically offered here.
Festival-wide star guests in 2026 include:
The Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra with over 100 young musicians from around the world, as well as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, are also part of the 41st festival edition.
