Advent magic in Schleswig-Holstein's "Little Amsterdam"
Friedrichstadt is one of the most beautiful small towns in Schleswig-Holstein — and perhaps the most unusual. Founded in 1621 by Dutch religious refugees, the town was laid out in the Amsterdam style with canals, clinker facades, stepped gables, and small waterways. Hence its nickname "Little Amsterdam". The historic old town is a listed monument. Friedrichstadt is located in the North Frisia district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, in the middle of the Eiderstedt peninsula.
When this unique architectural backdrop transforms into an Advent market at the end of November, an atmosphere is created that no other Christmas market in Northern Germany can match. The Friedrichstadt Canal Christmas traditionally takes place on the 1st Advent weekend. The organizer is the Tourism Association Friedrichstadt and surrounding area e.V., which carefully tailors the market to the historic old town.
The Canal Christmas opens on Friday (2–10 PM) with the traditional "Anpunschen" at the Christmas tree — Friedrichstadt residents and guests gather around fire baskets, punch, and carols. Saturday, the market runs from 11 AM to 10 PM and is the longest market day. Sunday closes from 11 AM to 5 PM with a family-friendly daytime atmosphere.
Unlike the large Christmas markets in Kiel, Lübeck, or Hamburg, Friedrichstadt focuses on quality and atmosphere rather than mass appeal. The number of huts remains manageable, the exhibitors are curated, and the backdrop — stepped gables and canals — replaces everything else. Those seeking Advent away from the mass festivals will find the North Frisian antithesis to the mainstream Christmas market here.
From November 27 to 29, 2026, the market square in Friedrichstadt will open its Advent huts. The official dates have been confirmed via the application form for stallholders (Faxbewerbung_GW_26.pdf, friedrichstadt.de). The organizer is the Tourism Association Friedrichstadt and surrounding area e.V.
The market relies on the unique "Little Amsterdam" architecture as its backdrop. Framed by the stepped gables of the old town, three days of Advent experience unfold, far from the big city Christmas markets — with a small, curated selection of huts and a sustainable atmosphere.
A detailed program schedule (live music, special events) will be published shortly before the date on friedrichstadt.de/die-stadt-entdecken/veranstaltungen/grachtenweihnacht.
