Frankfurt's northernmost village celebrates itself – Festival weekend at the community centre with all local clubs
Nieder-Erlenbach is the northernmost district of Frankfurt am Main, a village on the Erlenbach stream bordering the Wetterau district. Nieder-Erlenbach was incorporated in 1972 as part of the Hessian regional reform – an important date that continues to shape its identity today: For its 50th anniversary in 2022, the clubs celebrated a particularly large district festival. The rural landscape of half-timbered houses, courtyards, and fields makes Nieder-Erlenbach one of Frankfurt's most untypical districts.
The district festival is a pure club festival. Coordinated by the Verein Nieder-Erlenbacher Bürger (VNEB), all local clubs contribute their own stalls, catering, and stage performances to the programme. Regular participants include the Kerbburschen Nieder-Erlenbach, the tennis club TV Nieder-Erlenbach (drinks stand), the carnival club, and the dance group Die Bodentrampler. The Bodentrampler combine a cocktail bar with show dances and a performance by the Bembelbuwe, who sing old Frankfurt songs.
The venue is the festival grounds at the Nieder-Erlenbach Community Centre – in the village centre, within walking distance of the community centre. The community centre itself is the hub of club life and hosts many accompanying events. With approx. 5,000 inhabitants, Nieder-Erlenbach remains small enough that half the village celebrates together during the festival weekend.
Unlike the district festivals in Frankfurt's inner-city neighbourhoods (Bornheim, Bockenheim, Sachsenhausen), the festival in Nieder-Erlenbach has the character of a classic Wetterau village festival – even though it is officially located in Frankfurt. Apple wine, sausages, Bembel (traditional cider jugs), and sing-along songs are just as much a part of it as the modern cocktail stands run by the younger clubs.
Classic village festival weekend in northern Frankfurt: Saturday afternoon opening with club stalls, stage programme until late at night, Sunday morning pint and family programme.
