Hesse's most-attended summer theatre festival in a moated castle ruin on the Nidda
The Burgfestspiele Bad Vilbel is Hesse's largest theatre festival in terms of visitor numbers. Over 100,000 spectators per season, a total of 167 productions since its first edition in 1987, and more than 2.14 million visitors in the festival's history make this summer festival a cultural heavyweight in the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main region.
The venue is the Wasserburg Bad Vilbel, a stone castle built in the 11th or 12th century directly on the banks of the Nidda in the middle of the town. Originally the seat of the robber baron Bechtram von Vilbel, it was destroyed in 1399, rebuilt in the 15th century, and later fell into disrepair again. In 1955, the town acquired the complex and had it restored. Since 1987, the castle ruin has served as an extraordinary open-air stage — a modern grandstand construction ensures comfort, and the historic wall forms the backdrop.
Today, the festival performs on three stages: The main stage in the castle courtyard presents the major plays and musicals, the children's stage specializes in family productions and children's theatre performed during the day, and the intimate theatre cellar in the castle complex is the venue for smaller drama productions and cabaret.
The year 2026 again brings a packed programme between April 17th and September 6th. The main stage will feature the major productions Jesus Christ Superstar (Andrew Lloyd Webber), Die Feuerzangenbowle (Heinrich Spoerl), Wie im Himmel (based on the Swedish film), and Shakespeare's Ein Sommernachtstraum. For children and families, the programme includes Die kleine Hexe (Otfried Preußler), Alice in Wonderland, and the novel adaptation Rico, Oskar und die Tieferschatten. The theatre cellar will show Die 39 Stufen (based on Hitchcock), George Orwell's Animal Farm, and Flavia Coste's Nein zum Geld.
The theatre programme is complemented by concert and comedy guest performances such as The Golden Voices of Gospel, Queenz of Piano, Mama Shakers, and stand-up comedy. This clearly positions the Burgfestspiele as broader than a classic spoken-word theatre festival.
The organizer is Kultur Bad Vilbel GmbH, a municipal company. Restaurants and cafés in the castle complex are open before and after evening performances — the Burgfestspiele are not just theatre, but a complete summer evening experience in the heart of the Wetterau.
