On the Main Loop — Franconian Viticulture in its Prime Vineyards
The Mainschleife near Volkach is one of Germany's most iconic wine landscapes: along a narrow, almost closed loop of the Main River lie some of Franconia's most valuable vineyards — the Escherndorfer Lump (one of Germany's most famous Silvaner sites), the Fürstenberg, the Berg, and the Eulengrund. Weingut Michael Fröhlich, a family business in the center of Escherndorf, cultivates vines in several of these locations.
Hoffest Tradition
Every summer, the winery opens its gates for three days for the Hoffest. Tables are set up in the courtyard, a small stage is built, and the house's wine flows from the Bocksbeutel bottles directly to the guests. Live music accompanies the evenings with varied programs — Rock-Pop sets as well as traditional brass music are typically part of the weekend.
Weingut Michael Fröhlich
Weingut Fröhlich is among the esteemed family wineries on the Mainschleife. It primarily cultivates the main Franconian grape variety, Silvaner, along with Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Riesling, and Burgundy varieties. The Hoffeste in this region — from Volkach to Sommerach, Nordheim, Escherndorf, and Astheim — are summer highlights for lovers of Franconian wine.
Volkach and the Mainschleife as a Destination
Anyone visiting the Hoffest finds themselves in the middle of one of Bavaria's most beautiful wine regions. The old town of Volkach (5 km away), the pilgrimage church of Maria im Weingarten, the Vogelsburg overlooking the Mainschleife, and the numerous wineries invite a multi-day stay. The town of Volkach in the Kitzingen district, state of Bavaria, is considered the "gateway to the Mainschleife.".
