Season Kick-off on the Main Loop
Untereisenheim is a district of the market town of Eisenheim in the Würzburg district. Its location on the Main river, on the famous Main loop with Volkach, Sommerach, and Escherndorf, shapes the village. Every year at the end of April, the wine festival season of the Main loop begins here – with the Weinfest Untereisenheim, organized by the Untereisenheim Traditions Association for years.
Concept and Atmosphere
- Heated Tent: Unlike summer wine festivals, the festival in Untereisenheim uses a heated tent – the weather in Franconia at the end of April/beginning of May can still be changeable.
- Weingarten: The tent is connected to an outdoor area (Weingarten) which is opened when the weather is mild.
- Franconian Wines Directly from the Region: Wines from the Main loop are served – Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and more.
- Live Music and Brotzeit: The program is kept classic: cover bands, brass music, Franconian Brotzeit (a platter of cold cuts, cheeses, and bread), often with special events like the »Aalbachtal Express with DJ Tobi Grimm« on one of the evenings.
- Organizer: The Untereisenheim Traditions Association (Reichertsgasse 3, 97247 Markt Eisenheim) organizes the festival on a voluntary basis.
State and Cultural Context
Bavaria, administrative region of Lower Franconia, Würzburg district. The Main loop is considered one of Franconia's most famous wine-growing regions. The Weinfest Untereisenheim is not the largest wine festival in the region – Volkach and Sommerach make more impressive statements in the summer – but it is the earliest in the season and thus often the first reunion of the Franconian wine festival scene after the winter.
