About Stadtfestival Versmold

From August 21 to 23, 2026, the Stadtfestival Versmold in the Tecklenburger Land region will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Three days of open-air stage program on the Market Square and Town Hall Square, city funfair, flea market on Sunday, duck race on the Aabach stream, and around 15,000 visitors in the 'sausage city' on the fourth weekend of August. The organizer is the IGEV (Interest Group for the Shopping City of Versmold), which launched the Stadtfestival in 1986 to inaugurate the Wurstträgerbrunnen (Sausage Carrier Fountain). Admission to the entire stage program is free — from Kölsch rock and acoustic trios to Latin sound and an open-air church service on Sunday.

Three Days of City Festival in the Tecklenburger Land

Since 1986, the Stadtfestival Versmold has been the central summer event in the 'sausage city' in the Gütersloh district and is considered one of the largest volunteer-organized city festivals in Ostwestfalen-Lippe. The organizer is the IGEV — Interessengemeinschaft Einkaufsstadt Versmold (Interest Group for the Shopping City of Versmold), an association of retailers, restaurateurs, and clubs, which launched the festival in 1986 to mark the inauguration of the Wurstträgerbrunnen on the Market Square.

40th Edition — The Anniversary Festival

In 2026, the Stadtfestival will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The date is traditionally the fourth weekend of August — from Friday, August 21 to Sunday, August 23, 2026. After the death of the long-time festival organizer, the Stadtfestival is now organized entirely by the IGEV itself, without external service providers. Despite the setback and reorganization, the supporting structure adheres to the proven concept: free admission on all stages, financed by the city, sponsors, and stall fees.

Two Stages, Broad Musical Spectrum

The musical heart of the festival are the two open-air stages on the Marktplatz (Market Square) and the Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square). Over three days, 10 to 12 bands and solo artists perform — the spectrum ranges from acoustic trios and singer-songwriter sets to soul, blues, and Latin sound, as well as Kölsch rock and classic cover band dance music. The program design consciously aims for diversity to appeal to generations, from the family Sunday audience to the dancing Saturday night crowd.

Funfair, Flea Market, and Duck Race

Parallel to the stage program, the city center transforms into a funfair mile with dodgems, children's carousels, and new rides. Classic fairground stalls, food stands, and cocktail bars line the pedestrian zone. On Sunday, the traditional flea market also spreads throughout the city center — a crowd-puller from the entire region. The family highlight is the duck race on the Aabach on Sunday afternoon: hundreds of numbered plastic ducks float down the stream, with prizes for the fastest.

Versmold — 'Sausage City' in the Tecklenburger Land

Versmold is located in the Gütersloh district in the far west of Ostwestfalen, at the transition to the Tecklenburger Land and Münsterland regions. The city, with around 22,000 inhabitants, is known for its meat and sausage industry — the famous Wurstträgerbrunnen on the Market Square commemorates the tradition of sausage vendors who, in the 19th century, carried the products of local butchers in baskets (Kiepe) to the industrial areas of Bielefeld and the Ruhr region. The Stadtfestival reflects this down-to-earth, community-driven self-image: unpretentious, organized by clubs, without grand gestures.

Stadtfestival Versmold — edition 2026

The 40th Stadtfestival Versmold runs from August 21 to 23, 2026, in the city center — three days of open-air stage program on the Market Square and Town Hall Square, funfair mile, Sunday flea market, and duck race on the Aabach stream. For the first time, the IGEV is organizing the festival entirely on its own since the death of the long-time organizer. Free admission, approx. 15,000 visitors expected. The full stage lineup for the anniversary edition will be gradually published in spring/summer 2026 on the Stadtfestival's Facebook page.

40th Stadtfestival — The Anniversary Weekend

The 40th edition of the Stadtfestival in 2026 falls on the fourth weekend of August — Friday, August 21 to Sunday, August 23. Proven concept: two stages on the Market Square and Town Hall Square, city funfair, Sunday flea market, and duck race.

Special Anniversary Program

The IGEV has announced that the stage program for the anniversary edition will be particularly elaborate — with surprises, a look back at 40 years of festival history, and an expanded selection of artists. The exact lineup will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
