Medieval market on the Moschellandsburg in Obermoschel with Vikings, knights, crafts, music, and Feuerplanet
The Medieval Spectaculum at the Moschellandsburg near Obermoschel is one of the most visited and atmospheric medieval festivals in Rhineland-Palatinate. On the castle ruins, in close proximity to the smallest town in the Palatinate, reenactment groups, craftspeople, musicians, and jesters transform the castle hill into a vibrant journey back to the High and Late Middle Ages.
In 2026, the festival celebrates its 25th edition on the weekend of June 13th and 14th. A tent city with Vikings, Slavs, knights, and craftspeople, the musicians Spectaculatius and Tamburo Bant Skaldar, the juggler Hubertus, and the spectacular Feuerplanet fire show on Saturday evening form the highlights of the program.
The Moschellandsburg is a late medieval castle ruin, perched on a hill above the town of Obermoschel in the Donnersberg district. Obermoschel itself, with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, is the smallest town in the Palatinate and has held town rights since the Middle Ages. In the High and Late Middle Ages, the castle was the seat of the Lords of Moschellandsburg and still offers spectacular views over the Alsenz valley and the North Palatinate landscape.
The Medieval Spectaculum is organized by the Burgverein Obermoschel, a volunteer-run association dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of the castle ruins. With its 25th edition in 2026, the festival celebrates its quarter-century, making it one of the most traditional medieval markets in the region. Thousands of visitors from the Palatinate, Saarland, and neighboring regions flock to the castle annually.
The tent city at the foot and on the castle grounds comprises encampments of Vikings, Slavs, knights, and craftspeople. Reenactors in historical costumes present combat demonstrations, castle tours, and craft demonstrations such as blacksmithing, woodturning, felting, and leatherworking. The musicians Spectaculatius and Tamburo Bant Skaldar provide the medieval-folk sound, while the juggler Hubertus entertains the audience with his skills.
The absolute highlight is the "Feuerplanet" fire show on Saturday evening, where the nocturnal castle backdrop is staged with fire effects. On Saturday afternoon, an archery tournament takes place – accessible to both reenactors and interested visitors. There is a special archery activity for children, making it an active experience for families.
The 25th Medieval Spectaculum at the Moschellandsburg runs on the weekend of June 13th and 14th, 2026. A tent city with Vikings, Slavs, knights, and craftspeople transforms the castle ruins into a journey through time. The musicians Spectaculatius and Tamburo Bant Skaldar play medieval tunes, the juggler Hubertus entertains the audience, and on Saturday evening, the Feuerplanet fire show provides the spectacular highlight.
