Three days of Franconian wine and live music in the historic village center – 46th edition of the "Höllentage"
Obereisenheim is the largest district of the market town Eisenheim in the Würzburg district, Mainfranken. The historic village center with its half-timbered houses, sandstone buildings, and narrow alleys forms the natural backdrop for a street wine festival – the houses are so close together that the entire main street becomes a festival mile. The Obereisenheim Winegrowers' Association – an alliance of several local winegrowing families – has been organizing the festival since 1981. 2026 marks the 46th edition.
The festival name Höllentage is meant ironically: three days of concentrated wine culture in a tiny village center – the Franconian equivalent of a bacchanal. Specifically, this means:
The Obereisenheim Winegrowers' Association comprises about a dozen family wineries. They serve classic Franconian wine styles: Silvaner dry in the Bocksbeutel bottle, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Domina as a red wine complement. The vineyards on the Maindreieck (Eisenheim, Obervolkach, Astheim) provide the limestone subsoil that gives Franconian wines their typical character. The wine program is accompanied by tavern cuisine: Schäuferla (pork shoulder), Bratwürste (sausages), Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), Käsewürfel (cheese cubes), Franconian snack platters.
Eisenheim is located in the Maindreieck, the Franconian wine-growing region between Würzburg, Volkach, and Kitzingen. The market town with around 1,300 inhabitants is a hidden gem for wine lovers seeking to avoid the mass tourism levels of Volkach or Sommerach. The Höllentage is the town's largest annual event.
From July 3rd to 5th, 2026, Obereisenheim will transform into an open-air wine mile. The opening on Friday at 6 PM traditionally takes place in the courtyard of one of the participating wineries. Afterwards, several courtyards open simultaneously – visitors shuttle between the locations, tasting wine and enjoying live music. The main street is declared a pedestrian zone during the festival days.
The Obereisenheim Winegrowers' Association comprises about a dozen family wineries that present their Silvaner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, and Bacchus. This is accompanied by Franconian tavern cuisine.
The exact band lineup per courtyard will be announced by the Winegrowers' Association before the festival begins and on eisenheim.de.
By car via the A7 (exit Bergrheinfeld) or A3 (exit Würzburg/Randersacker). By train: to Würzburg Hbf, then take bus 8205 to Eisenheim/Obereisenheim. Parking is signposted outside the village center – no parking in the narrow village center.
Free admission to the festival. Wine, food, and drinks are available directly at the vintner stands.
Overnight stays in Volkach (5 km away), Eltmann, or Würzburg are recommended – Obereisenheim itself has few accommodation options.
