Culture on the Canal — The Herne Specialty

The Kulturschiffe Herne are a unique format in North Rhine-Westphalia: instead of in a classic concert hall or cultural center, the concerts and cabaret evenings take place on an excursion ship. The ship Santa Monika II departs from the Unser Fritz pier in the Wanne district and sails on the Rhine-Herne Canal during the event — past industrial heritage scenery, locks, and old collieries. The atmosphere is intimate: just under 100 seats, the audience sits close to the artist, accompanied by water, wind, and sunsets.

Four Evenings, Four Styles — The 2026 Season

The 2026 season includes four cultural evenings with different musical and cabaret styles:

• Thursday, May 7, 2026 — "setunion auf'm Kanal" — Standards & Evergreens from the American Songbook: Season opening concert with the band setunion and their jazz standards. Advance booking via the Herne Municipal Music School (cafeteria and secretariat) or by phone at 0 23 23 / 91 90 10.
• Saturday, August 8, 2026 — "NachtSchnittchen with Helmut Sanftenschneider and Guests": Comedy format by Herne cabaret artist Helmut Sanftenschneider, with changing guests. Tickets via reservix.de/tickets-nachtschnittchen.

The Santa Monika II — The Ship

The Santa Monika II is a classic excursion ship on the Rhine-Herne Canal with cozy interiors and an open upper deck. During the concerts, the ship sails along the canal — a scenic tour through industrial heritage and water landscapes. The stage is set up on the indoor deck, and the audience sits at bistro tables with chairs. The acoustics are surprisingly good — many artists rave about the "intimate live experience" on the canal water.

Industrial Heritage Setting in the Ruhr Area

The Rhine-Herne Canal is one of the famous waterways of the Ruhr area, built in the early 20th century for coal transport. Today, it is the lifeline of the Emscher Landscape Park, with cycle paths along the banks, water sports, and industrial heritage monuments. The Wanne district (Herne-Wanne) is one of the oldest mining settlement areas in the Ruhr region — the Unser Fritz colliery (now an industrial monument) gave the pier its name. Sitting on a cultural ship against this industrial backdrop is a typical Ruhr area experience: culture in a rusty setting.

Tickets from February — Seats Limited

Advance sales for the 2026 season start on Friday, February 6, 2026. As seats on a ship are naturally limited (approx. 100 seats per evening), early booking is recommended. The series is a highlight in the Herne cultural calendar and usually sells out weeks before the events.

Herne — Ruhr Area, Industrial Heritage, Water Sports

Herne is a city of around 156,000 inhabitants in the Ruhr area, located between Bochum and Gelsenkirchen, characterized by mining history and industrial heritage. The Herne Municipal Music School is the organizer of the Kulturschiffe series and one of the city's central cultural anchors. The Rhine-Herne Canal, with its waterways, locks, and canal monuments (Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg nearby), makes Herne a cultural water city in the Ruhr area.
