Frisian Riding Festival on the Village Green — UNESCO Cultural Heritage since 2014
Ringreiten is a Frisian riding tradition where participants ride at a gallop down a lane and attempt to strike a small ring, suspended from a device, with a lance — the ring is barely larger than a two-euro coin. Whoever pierces the most rings becomes the king or queen of the event. The discipline has its origins in medieval knightly tournaments but has evolved into a living custom of riding clubs in Schleswig-Holstein, particularly on the Eiderstedt peninsula. Since 2014, Ringreiten has been part of the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Germany.
The Witzwort Riding Club of 1946 organizes several formats that together make up the Witzwort Ringreiten year:
Based on documented past events, the District Ringreiten in Witzwort follows a clear rhythm:
Accompanying the event are refreshments with coffee and cake, bratwurst stands, and drinks; many families from the village spend the entire day on the festival meadow.
Witzwort is located in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, on the Eiderstedt peninsula between the Eider river and the North Sea, about 15 kilometers west of Husum. The region is famous for its thatched and traditional farmhouses, its salt marshes — and for its Ringreiten culture, which is cultivated more intensely here than almost anywhere else. Almost every riding club on the peninsula hosts its own Ringreiten, and during the summer months, the events line up in the villages. The King of Kings is traditionally crowned in St. Peter-Ording.
Founded in 1946, the Witzwort Riding Club looks back on nearly 80 years of club history. For its 50th anniversary in 1996, a club chronicle was published documenting the club's significance for village life. Today, the club is not only the organizer of Ringreiten but also offers riding lessons and equestrian sports in a broader sense. The children's riding section of the club is considered one of the most vibrant in North Friesland.
Ringreiten is not a show event for tourists but a living club festival. On the festival meadow, the clatter of hooves, the sound of lances, and the referees' calls of 'Three rings!' mingle with the aroma of coffee and children's laughter. The atmosphere is familial, friendly, and certainly proud — the sport is demanding, and the tradition is upheld with seriousness. Those who want to experience Eiderstedt beyond the tourist paths will find an authentic insight into North Frisian village and riding culture here.
The Witzwort Riding Club of 1946 plans to hold a Ringreiten event in Witzwort again in 2026. The exact date within Eiderstedt's summer Ringreiten season will be coordinated with neighboring communities' clubs and announced in advance on the municipal website and via club channels.
Based on the documented structure from previous years, the following schedule is expected:
In addition to the District Riding, the Children's Ringreiten is also planned as a separate event within Witzwort's riding season.
The exact program for the 2026 edition will be communicated in advance by the Witzwort Riding Club of 1946. Based on the established club tradition (documented for the 2024 edition), the following structure is expected:
