22nd Cultural Festival of the Market Town Werneck in the Schweinfurt Region
What began in 2005 as a small municipal event series has developed into one of the most beautiful cultural festivals in Lower Franconia: The Wernecker Kulturfrühling sets a cultural accent every year in March and April in the rural market town. 2026 marks the 22nd edition – an anniversary celebrated with 18 events from the most diverse genres.
The opening takes place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 8:00 PM in the Café Balthasar at the magnificent Werneck Castle. The castle, a masterpiece by Würzburg court architect Balthasar Neumann, serves as the festival's central stage. Other venues include the Wolfgang-Graf-Halle, the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Hergolshausen, the Balthasar-Neumann elementary school in Schleerieth, the community center, and chapels in the districts.
The program includes a musical-literary journey along the Main River, a cheeky Franconian musical cabaret with the HerzensBLECHer (“App in die Zukunft”), a reading with bestselling author Michael Kobr, a tribute to Loriot, the traditional Spring Concert on April 18 with the music associations of Stettbach/Vasbühl and Egenhausen/Schleerieth, the 15th edition of the Poetry Slam, an Easter concert by the Eßleben music ensembles, “Orient & Friends” (dance evening for women), theater productions, and several exhibitions, including “ECHO DER ZEIT” and Mongolian photography.
Werneck has a population of just under 11,000 and is located in the Schweinfurt district, easily accessible via the A70 motorway. The princely-bishopric summer residence, Werneck Castle, built from 1733–1745 according to plans by Balthasar Neumann, is one of Franconia's most important Baroque complexes and is now a district hospital. Café Balthasar in the castle and the park provide an extraordinary backdrop for the Kulturfrühling, which has made the festival known far beyond the local audience.
The program focuses on proven successful formats (Spring Concert, Poetry Slam, Fränkisches Mariensingen) and new highlights (bestseller reading with Michael Kobr, Loriot tribute, Mongolian photography). The organizer is the Market Town of Werneck, which has been organizing the festival since 2005.
With 18 events spread over six weeks, the Kulturfrühling is Werneck's largest cultural event of the year and has established itself as a regional cultural brand.
