Open-Air concert by the Werneck Wind Philharmonic in the Balthasar Neumann Castle Park
Werneck Castle, built between 1733–1745 according to plans by Balthasar Neumann, is one of Lower Franconia's grand baroque structures. Its extensive castle park, through which the River Wern flows, provides one of the most beautiful concert venues in northern Bavaria. Every July, the Musikverein Werneck e.V. transforms the park into an open-air stage for its traditional Schlosskonzert of the Wind Philharmonic.
The Wind Philharmonic of the Musikverein Werneck differs from a traditional brass band: it is a large ensemble of wind and percussion instruments capable of performing demanding original symphonic literature and arrangements from classical music, film, and musicals. It was most recently conducted by Florian Unkauf, whose programs have spanned from Strauss, Shostakovich, and Brahms to "West Side Story," "La La Land," and Michael Bublé, with programs like "Summer Dances.".
The concept is wonderfully relaxed: blankets, picnic baskets, and chairs are welcome. The audience gathers around the mobile stage in the castle park, with catering provided by local clubs and breweries. In case of rain, the concert is cancelled without replacement – dependence on the weather is part of the event's charm.
In 2026, the organizer will add the Musik im Schlosspark series on the following day, July 26th – extending the musical summer use of the castle park to an entire weekend for the first time.
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 8:00 PM, the Werneck Wind Philharmonic will open its summer concert evening in the castle park. The program follows the proven structure: one part with classical waltzes and dances by great composers, a second part with film and musical melodies.
On Sunday, July 26, 2026, the Musik im Schlosspark series will follow – an additional event of the Werneck-800 series for the city's anniversary, further establishing the castle park as a concert venue.
The exact program and soloists will be announced before the concert at mv-werneck.de.
By train: Werneck station, approx. 15 minutes walk to the castle park. By car: A70 exit Werneck.
Free admission, donations requested. Blankets and picnic baskets are explicitly welcome.
Open-air event with no alternative venue – the event will be cancelled in case of rain.
