Franconian Kerwa with two inns and two denominations — a four-day traditional festival in the Ansbach district
Some Franconian Kerwas are big and loud — the Gebsattel one is small and heartfelt. It is one of the finest examples of how a village in the Ansbach district celebrates Kerwa: not as an organized large-scale event, but as a community-supported traditional festival where parishes, clubs, and inns work together.
Gebsattel is located in the Ansbach district in the state of Bavaria, about 5 km east of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. With just under 1,500 inhabitants, it is a typical Middle Franconian rural community, characterized by agriculture, crafts, and a close-knit club structure. The geographical proximity to Rothenburg also makes the Kerwa interesting for day-trippers — at the same time, the festival retains its village character and size.
A remarkable peculiarity of the Gebsatteler Kerwa: The village has two denominations — Protestant and Catholic — side by side, each with its own church and parish. At the Kerwa, both celebrate together: Protestant activities (coffee and cake at the castle, concerts) meet Catholic festive services, and in the end, all generations sit at the same table. “Gratitude, Encounter, and Cohesion” — the self-chosen Kerwa motto.
The two local inns are the gastronomic heart of the Kerwa. The Schlachtschüssel is served here — the traditional Franconian Kerwa kickoff with fresh kettle meat, sausage, and sauerkraut. Mayor and community explicitly emphasize how important it is to support both inns, “because they are the social fabric of the village”.
The schedule of the Gebsatteler Kerwa follows a fixed rhythm:
Behind the smooth running are the clubs: Böllerschützen for the kickoff, Sports Club for the Saturday morning pint, Music Club for the musical accompaniment, Parishes for the spiritual aspect. Mayor Elli Stammler coordinates.
The dates for the Gebsatteler Kerwa 2026 have been confirmed by reporting in the Fränkische Landeszeitung (FLZ) and the Gebsattel municipality's event calendar — Thursday to Sunday around the third Sunday in September (in 2026: September 20). The organizers are the municipality, both parishes, and the local clubs.
Detailed program items (performance times of music groups, exact dishes in the inns) will be communicated in the weeks leading up to the Kerwa via the municipal website and the Fränkische Landeszeitung.
The official dates classically span Thursday to Sunday around the third Sunday in September — according to the batch note, September 18–21, 2026 (FLZ reporting indicates a longer four-day span, with the program centered on Sat/Sun).
Gebsattel is located about 5 km east of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, on Staatsstraße 2419. By train to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, then by bus. Parking available in the village center and at the sports grounds.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Food and drinks are paid for on-site at the inns and by the clubs.
The Kerwa can be easily combined with a day trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber (5 km away) — the old town classic on the Romantic Road is one of Germany's most famous medieval towns.
