Five days of festivities in the Fichtelgebirge — traditional meadow festival in Bad Weißenstadt am See, Bavarian intangible cultural heritage
Meadow festivals have a long history in Upper Franconia: originally stemming from the agricultural harvest and shepherd traditions of the 19th century, they are now situated between folk festival, homeland festival, and village festival. The Weißenstadt Folk and Meadow Festival is one of the most prominent representatives of this tradition in the Fichtelgebirge and has been on the Bavarian list of intangible cultural heritage for several years.
The festival grounds on the Anger, located on Wunsiedler Straße, are the heart of the festival. For five days, the town's festival tent, amusement rides, showman stalls, and club stands are located here. The program follows a fixed schedule: opening ceremony on the first day, festival evenings with various bands, family day with reduced prices for amusement rides, parade on Meadow Monday, and the closing evening on the last day.
The highlight of the festival is traditionally Meadow Monday with the parade through the town center. A unique Weißenstadt tradition is Jersey Day: a large portion of the locals come to the meadow festival in sports jerseys on this day — football jerseys of SV Bad Weißenstadt, teams from Bayreuth, Bamberg, or their own club jerseys. In 2026, the cover band PIPELINE will play live at the festival grounds on Monday evening and will participate in the tradition by presenting their own jerseys.
Bad Weißenstadt am See in the Wunsiedel district of the Fichtelgebirge is a state-recognized spa and health resort. The meadow festival combines the established festival tradition with spa culture: spa visitors are explicitly invited to experience the festival catering with Upper Bavarian specialties — bratwurst, Schäuferla, Krapfen, and local beer. The festival grounds are within walking distance of the town center and the Weißenstädter See.
On Meadow Monday, July 20th, 2026, the cover band PIPELINE will perform at the festival tent. The band presented a fitting jersey to the mayor of Weißenstadt, Matthias Beck, in advance, thus participating in the "Trikot-Tag", the typical Weißenstadt tradition: whoever attends the meadow festival on Meadow Monday comes in a sports jersey.
