Enjoyment, crafts, and tradition in a Markgräfler wine village
Since 1995, the Markgräfler wine village of Laufen, part of Sulzburg, transforms into a vibrant showcase for wine, culinary delights, and craftsmanship on the second weekend in August. Wineries, farms, carpentry shops, and studios along the main street open their doors and welcome visitors directly on-site — a rare opportunity to meet the producers in person and experience their work.
The wineries Rainer Schlumberger, Wolf, and Grether, as well as the Laufen Altenberg wine cooperative, present their Markgräfler wines — Gutedel, Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau. The Englerhof distillery, Hofgut Hug, and Obstgut Güntert complement the offerings with brandies, liqueurs, and juices from their own production. Tastings are available directly from the vintner and distiller at each station.
What distinguishes the event from a classic wine festival: you can watch the crafts being made live. The Jonny B furniture manufactory, Thomas Ludin's carpentry shop, and the Rundholz design studio open their workshops. From the saw cut to the finished piece of furniture, from pressing cider to flavoring liqueurs — the producers show their work transparently and answer questions.
The Rebea restaurant and Schmitzhof cater to their guests with regional specialties — Baden classics such as Bibeleskäs, Vesperteller, and Tarte flambées, complemented by wines from La Morra (Piedmont), Sulzburg's partner city. Brass bands and bagpipers provide musical accompaniment in the alleys.
Laufen is one of the four districts of the town of Sulzburg in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. The Markgräflerland region between Freiburg and Basel is one of Germany's warmest and sunniest wine-growing areas — and the typical Gutedel grape finds its home here. The picturesque half-timbered houses of Laufen, the vine-covered slopes, and the short distances between the farms make the village the ideal backdrop for a weekend full of enjoyment.
On August 15th and 16th, 2026, the Sulzburg district of Laufen once again invites you to the traditional event "Wein, Essen & Laufen". Farms, wineries, workshops, and restaurants along the main street will open their doors from 11 AM.
Brass bands and bagpipers will parade through the alleys, restaurants will offer wine from the partner city La Morra (Piedmont), and furniture manufacturers will showcase their workshops — a perfect symbiosis of enjoyment, craftsmanship, and tradition.
Free admission. Tastings, food, and products are paid for directly at the stands of the participating farms — usually at moderate prices.
Laufen is located between Müllheim and Sulzburg, easily accessible via the A 5 motorway (Müllheim/Neuenburg exit). By train to Müllheim (Baden), then continue by bus or taxi to Laufen. Parking is limited in the village center — arrival by public transport or bicycle via the Wine and Cheese Route is recommended.
Saturday, August 15, 2026: from 11 AM. Sunday, August 16, 2026: from 11 AM. The participating farms are usually open until early evening.
Free admission to the event. Payment is made directly at the participating farms and workshops for wine tastings, food, and purchased products. Tastings are usually inexpensive or free.
