55 years of the club, a village tradition in the Segeberg district
The Verschönerungs- und Vogelschießerverein Schmalensee e.V. was founded in 1971 and is one of the defining cultural institutions of the small community on Bornhöveder See in the Segeberg district. Its club name combines two tasks: the care and beautification of village life (village tidying, Easter bonfire, Advent festival) — and the annual Vogelschießen as the central summer festival.
The Vogelschießen is one of the oldest North German shooting traditions: a wooden eagle is mounted on a high pole, which is shot down piece by piece by participants using bolts. Whoever hits the last splinter that separates the body from the pole becomes Volkskönig or Volkskönigin and represents the village for one year. The breast, head, wings, and crown are each awarded with insignia. The shooting takes place on the festival meadow — followed by the ceremony with the proclamation of the king and dancing.
In 2026, the Vogelschießen falls in the anniversary year: the VVV celebrates 55 years since its founding in 1971. The anniversary highlight — a special celebration with club history and a reunion of former kings and queens — is planned for March 28, 2026, in the community hall. The Vogelschießen itself retains its fixed place in the club calendar on June 20 and will form the crown of the anniversary year.
The Vogelschießen is embedded in an all-day village festival: a parade through Schmalensee, games on the festival meadow, food with bratwurst and drinks, and an evening festival ball. The reigning Volkskönig 2025 — Rebecca Tralau, crowned after the rain-soaked games of that summer — will hand over the title to the new monarch.
Schmalensee is a municipality in the Amt Bornhöved in the Segeberg district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located on the west bank of Bornhöveder See between Neumünster and Plön. Club life here is vibrant — in addition to the VVV, there is a sports club, a fire brigade, and several initiatives that collectively support the village.
In 2026, the Vogelschießen falls into the VVV Schmalensee's 55th club year. The actual anniversary celebration will take place in March in the community hall — the Vogelschießen on June 20 crowns the anniversary year with the community's central traditional event.
The VVV board for 2026 consists of Mareike Grenke, Karolin van het Loo, Sandra Pinkowski, Doreen Saggau, Katharina Kirstein, and Imke Wysokinski. In addition to the Vogelschießen, they organize the village tidying event, the Easter bonfire, and the Advent events.
