Village festival in the heart of Holstein

Ruhwinkel is a municipality with around 800 inhabitants in the Bokhorst-Wankendorf office in the Plön district of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The municipality lies on the edge of Holstein Switzerland – a hilly, lake-rich landscape that is one of the most beautiful local recreation areas in Schleswig-Holstein. In the municipality's extensive event calendar, the village festival is one of the most important community dates.

The FFW as host

The organizer is the Ruhwinkel Volunteer Fire Department – as in many rural communities in Schleswig-Holstein, the fire department is not only an emergency organization but also the most important supporter of village community life. The festival grounds are the municipality's fire station, which, with its spacious forecourt, offers space for stalls, seating, and program items.

A classic afternoon festival

It starts at 2:30 PM – a typical North German festival time that appeals equally to the older generation and families with small children. The program includes: barbecue with sausages and steaks, cake buffet (often donated by the women's group or sports club), drinks, and small games for children. The fire department presents its emergency vehicles, and the youngest generation can sit in the fire engines.

Not a spectacle – a meeting place

The Dorffest Ruhwinkel is deliberately not an event format with large stages or well-known acts. It is a meeting festival for the village community, an occasion to meet neighbors, talk to clubs, and thank the fire department for their voluntary service. This simplicity is part of North German festival culture – and makes the event all the more authentic in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Plön district.
