Season opening with a communal dip in the Baltic Sea on May 1st
While the first asparagus festivals are already underway on the mainland, on Rügen, something bolder happens on May 1st: the communal New Year's Dive in the Baltic Sea. The water temperature at this time is usually between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius. The reason this day is still one of the most popular festival dates in spring on Rügen is simple: it is the official opening of the bathing season – a tongue-in-cheek ritual that has a lot to do with Northern German self-irony and maritime community.
The festival day is divided into three phases:
The New Year's Dive is not a sporting event. It's a mix of nostalgia, fun, and seasonal ritual. Many participants come in historic bathing costumes or outfits – sometimes old-fashioned swimwear, sometimes silly costumes, sometimes both. It's about community, about the courage to brave the still-cold Baltic Sea for two seconds, and about the symbolic opening of what Binz stands for: beach, spa architecture, promenade, season.
May 1st is usually a rather quiet day on the island. With the New Year's Dive, Binz has created an occasion that populates the beach promenade on a date that falls between the pre- and main seasons. For day-trippers from Stralsund, Greifswald, or Rostock, the journey is especially worthwhile for the atmosphere and the free program.
The organizer is Binzer Bucht Tourismus GmbH. The stage act on the beach is performed by changing artists, and the promenade program has been run by the Artistokraten for years. The diving group itself is recruited from island residents and brave individuals from all over Germany who plan it annually and prepare costumes. Anyone who simply wants to join in the water is welcome – there is no registration.
May 1st, 2026 falls on a Friday, making it perfect for a long weekend. Binz uses this date for its annual season opening with the New Year's Dive in the Baltic Sea. The Artistokraten take over the beach promenade from 11 am with their typical mix of juggling, acrobatics, and walking acts.
At 2:30 pm, the diving group, often in historic bathing costumes and outfits, gathers at the beach access near the pier. A short speech, musical accompaniment, then the communal jump into the still-cool Baltic Sea. Anyone who wants to swim along is welcome.
Afterwards, the program continues on the Kurplatz with the first open-air concert of the summer season – the start of the concert formats Blue Wave, Barefoot Concerts, and SEASON Summer Music, which will follow throughout the summer.
The program and artist lineup at the Kurplatz will be published by the organizer Binzer Bucht Tourismus at binzer-bucht.de. In case of extreme weather conditions, the New Year's Dive may be moved to the beach area or postponed.
Admission: completely free for all program points – promenade art, New Year's Dive, and concert at the Kurplatz. Food, drinks, and small market stalls at usual prices.
Train: ICE/RE to Ostseebad Binz, then a 5-minute walk to the beach promenade and the pier. Car: B96/B196 to Binz, parking available around the town center. Increased traffic on May 1st – early arrival recommended.
Completely free. Food and drinks at promenade stands and cafés at usual prices.
If you want to go into the water: bring a bathrobe, towel, costume if applicable, and above all, courage. Water temperature in early May usually 8–10 °C – don't stay in too long, get out of the water quickly and back into warm clothes. In case of extreme weather, the New Year's Dive may be postponed or canceled; current status available from Binzer Bucht Tourismus.
